it's easy to forget that expensive contracts can still be traded, if the team holding the contract just agrees to continue to pay some portion of the money (though usually that would be a pill swallowed reluctantly).

worked out OK for the Tigers with the Prince Fielder deal. (course, that ended badly for Texas in a not really foreseen way but I do think both teams had insurance on that contract.)

Exactly. It's not impossible for the Cubs to sign him but the penalties they would face for going over the luxury tax are severe and they would most likely want to avoid that. This is what the common Cubs fan doesn't understand. The only way I see it happening is if they shed Heyward's contract which is very unlikely.

They're going to be over anyways regardless. Just depends which level they can stomach and what they expect the payroll to be on the coming years. Gotta start paying these young guys soon.

Interesting FA note - Michael Brantley's reps are saying he is willing to play 1B full-time.

Could open some new markets for the veteran if he is willing to be mobile

Heyward isn't going anywhere. No chance of an opt out either with as much as he's getting paid. lol. I don't see any team wanting that.

I have a hard time believing anyone could get excited about a 15-20 HR guy playing first base...especially one that is brittle and on the wrong side of 30

Cubs don't NEED Harper. BTW Heyward > Harper on defense and it's not even close.

Schoop was far from my first choice for 1B. Could be a great signing, but it could be terrible

Wolves assures us that Schoop won't be playing 1st next season which virtually guarantees that Schoop will be playing 1st next season.

If the Twins want to lead the league in errors, Go ahead.

JackThree-Trying to figure out why Dodgers would want Abreu. Dodgers have Bellinger, Muncy, and Freese. Dodgers going to put Bellinger in CF and trade Joc Pederson and Muncy?

What would you say to Pederson for Abreu straight up?

Can't see the Dodgers preferring Abreu to Pederson. Abreu has 1 expensive year of control left and Pederson 2, plus Pederson is younger, more versatile defensively and coming off a much better 2018. Abreu may be going into decline at this point while Pederson is reaching his prime years.

Seriously? Why would the Sox want Kemp if they’re rebuilding? If they’re actually “going for it”, they might as well just keep Abreu. Unless of course they could trade him to free up money so they can sign both Harper AND Machado. They could replace Abreu at 1B with a trade to STL for Jose Martinez, now that Goldschmidt is there.

If they trade Abreu to LA, it’s going to be for either Pederson or Puig plus a non top 10 prospect along with one of them.

Jose Martinez would be a nice DH for the Sox. He can hit.

Salary dump for both teams. Abreu has 1 more year left on his contract too. Dodgers can add non top 10 prospect.
