Do dead people still have valid IDs though?

Under ordinary circumstances, this makes the most sense.

But with COVID-19 lurking, I totally understand folks taking advantage of the legitimate alternative options.

Would it?

I mean, I've yet to hear of any tangible controversy regarding a lack of showing IDs, other than people clamoring for them.

Enacting laws to solve problems that don't exist always seemed like a counter intuitive approach from the party of "smaller government."

Riots in Baltimore tonight? Police shooting, police in unmarked car, suspect pulls up along side and opens fire. Police shoot back killing suspect.

This should never have been a question. It's something that should have been enacted decades ago. For me showing an ID when voting is a literal no brainer. There is no reason in the year 2020 that people can't cheaply acquire an ID. I need an ID to buy a beer but I don't need one to vote for the leader of the free world. Absolutely bizarre.

It is inconceivable to me that there are States that don't have both Democratic and Republican observers overseeing the process.
States can resolve that lag, many chose not to.

Some purposefully lagged to give the illusion of one candidate winning on Election Night (cough*Pennsylvania*cough).

Imagine Biden having a 100,000+ vote lead from the start of Election Day. Georgia wouldn't matter, Nevada wouldn't matter, Arizona wouldn't matter.

But alas, the PA GOP balked at the idea of counting the expected and unprecedented number of mail-in ballots early.

Because some people can't afford ID's....

They'll loot a footlocker but not a DMV I suppose

Trump is literally saying that the only way he'd lose is if there was fraud. God, he is insufferable and I cannot wait until he's out of here.
Reality is somewhere in-between these two quotes.

True, mail-in and early voting have been going on a while. But ramping it all up so quickly led to minor issues.

True, voting in person with ID would solve a lot of problems. But we all know it would favor one side over the other, especially during a pandemic that one side takes more seriously than the other.

What's the compromise? I guess we will see.

Who would I show an ID to when I vote by mail?

Again, all these claims of fraud in the voting system, yet nothing really proves that. It's actually something both sides agree is a pretty clean system. Heck, even the GOP lt. governor of Georgia says there are no credible examples of voter fraud in Georgia. So basically, voter ID only serves to disenfranchise people and create new bars for people to jump over in order to vote.

Seems a lot of countries have various forms of voter ID (some with a card that is sent in the mail, others actual photo IDs). Canada is one of them.

If you vote by mail it should only be by request and you should have to provide the ID# or something or something of that nature. Why is it another hoop for people when most have an id? I'm not understanding

I can transfer thousands of dollars from a bank in France to a bank in Switzerland using my phone while I sit on a beach in Brazil. And I don't need to show ID to do it.

This is 2020.

What problem does voter ID solve?

Seriously.

We talk about this all of the time, and there is no problem.

It's like a company coming out and selling a product to rid monsters from the underneaths of beds and closets. Sure, it seems like a well-though out and necessary product, but will still have yet to see evidence of monsters in the rooms of our American kids.

We'd be enacting laws to fix something that doesn't exist. That's big, big government and you libertarians here should balk at that.

Sure.

How about requiring that during Voter Registration?

And that can be done online too. If I can open a bank account online, I should be able to register to vote online.

Millions of people don't have an ID for some reason or another. Because they don't have a government ID they shouldn't be allowed to vote? I don't follow. I'm not understanding. Where is the widespread fraud that would cause us to do something like require voter IDs?

A big upside about Trump losing is that qualified folks branded as non-loyalists in government will be able to breathe a big sigh of relief. But given this news, they'll have to hold their breath a little longer.

There has to be a compromise here.

The US government has every right to verify whether a person is legally entitled to cast a vote.

I guess for me the compromise is verifying a person's right to vote but doing it in a way that doesn't require in-person voting.

Absolutely.

I believe states should be forced to verify the legality of a vote before counting it.

I just don't think that requires in-person voting and in-hand IDs.

Because the president's words have real meaning and matter.

The best part of this story is the fact that he said all of this on Parler, the far-right's new safe space. Since his posts and account were deleted on that site, will the right-wingers now need to move to an even safer space?
