An interpreter is usually the guys best friend and is on the team payroll. Has nothing to do with his ability to speak English.

I’ve interviewed quite a few Latin American players. When one doesn’t have full confidence in his English, he doesn’t want to make a mistake or struggle to reach for a word when he’s being asking quick and often detailed questions on live TV in a still-noisy stadium.

Basically everyone I know took 4 years of Spanish in high school and aren’t the least bit fluent let alone able to confidently conduct an interview in Spanish. It’s not like it’s his job to speak English.

If he started learning English 8 years ago and is around it every day for more than half the year, I find it hard to believe he can't communicate effectively enough.

He can speak English. Both Hinch and Baker says he communicates with teammates in English. That he doesn’t feel comfortable speaking a language that isn’t his native language doesn’t mean anything. Even Torres has to use an interpreter for some questions. Also, English is a really difficult language and many prolly who only speak English still suck at it.

38 million Americans speak Spanish as their primary language at home. There’s a reason many employers pay more for bilingual speakers. It has nothing to do with politics.
