He plays with reckless abandon and that is what makes him so very exciting....my concern for him long-term is that recklessness/fearlessness is also what is going to put him on the IL. One crazy, contorted and ill-advised steal of third and he is going to blow a knee, break a finger, or tear something else.

He's fun to watch and great for the game for sure!

The image of the diving catch is FAR better than any generic batting stance image.

I have not had this much fun watching baseball since Griffey early years. It’s a been a long drought for me so this is so enjoyable. I have as much fun watching tatis as I do Luka doncic in basketball. Tatis for MVP!

An ice cube tray has less injury risk than Tulo.

Can someone seriously explain to me why everyone is always so worried about injuries in baseball / why injuries are so prevalent? I don't get it. I grew up on rugby league and cricket - the latter of which has a very similar skillset to baseball - and have never seen either fanbase carry this constant anxiety about injuries, nor did I experience it when I played.

It seems like there are so few interactions and chances to get hurt in baseball. I fully understand how pitchers are more likely to get stress injuries from throwing at such a high intensity repeatedly - and they generate all that momentum from a standstill. But at the same time, a fast bowler in cricket could easily bowl 40 overs (240 deliveries) over five days in a test match and no one will blink an eye. And they’re still bowling 100mph. But I get there are different body mechanics at play here, so pitcher injuries don't surprise me.

But everyone else..

A batter steps up in baseball and would face maybe 30 - 40 pitches in a game? In cricket you’re facing 30 deliveries if you’re a crappy batter - a few hundred if you’re any good, constantly running between wickets all day instead of running in a square, maybe once, if you’re lucky.

I couldn’t even count how many more fielding plays there are in cricket than baseball.

So is it maybe because in baseball you’re not doing a great deal at all times, guys are doing this stuff cold, making it more likely to pull or stretch something? It’s crazy to me that people say Tatis plays with too much reckless abandon. He is a professional athlete for crying out loud - you should put in 110% in on every play and put your body on the line. At least that what I was taught growing up.

I’ve actually wondered this a lot and have wanted to ask for a while.

^This.

Look, your a bada$$ rugby player but generational talents who cannot or do not stay on the field will never be the face of the game. One torn thumb ligament for this caliber of player would put them out of the game and therefore out of mind.

Aaron Judge would be that guy currently but he can’t stay healthy.

Shohei mania was fast and white hot and look now.

Brady, Lebron, MJ, Kobe are who they are in large part because they were generational talents + highly consistent.

There are dozens of sports that have high impact collisions, high exertion plays with over extensions etc. I would never have imagined that stealing bases would rank that high on the injury risk scale, unless it was just something players weren't conditioned to do.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my impression was the majority of baseball injuries aren't specifically from base running / stealing anyway.

I'm not arguing the best players need to stay out on the field. I'm questioning why the hell baseball players get injured so much, or if it just seems that way because everyone is always banging on about it.

Can we all agree that Tatis has overtaken Acuna and is far behind Soto?

well certain positions are more injury prone. pitchers with elbows and shoulder for sure because of the sheer force of the action of throwing. Injuries happen because of the length of the season and forced repetition, not necessarily the brutality of the action. so instead of a high impact collision like football think of a nagging hamstring that just isnt given enough time to heal (griffey jr). over time the cumulative wears and tears add up to significant injury and loss of playing time.

“All” never... I agree with everything except “far behind”... I say Tatis has definitely surpassed Acuña, but it wouldn’t take much for Acuña to pull back ahead. Soto is such a complete hitter, I do agree he’s ahead of both, but good luck getting everyone to agree to that haha...

I still think they are all very close. Soto isn't far ahead of Tatis by any means. While he's a better hitter, I would rather have Tatis or Acuna in the field and on the paths, every day of the week. Im not sure Soto is that much better of a hitter than Tatis to just say Soto is far ahead.

@SupermanBrandon —- I keep agreeing with just about everything you post, including this - word for word. I knew there had to be other smart people here!
