So am I understanding correctly that if he gets another 103 plate appearances that will qualify him for all stat leaderboards? If so, he could win a batting title.

Wow I wonder how many people considered this. Can one of the experts chime in and confirm?

He needs 502 PA unless the Astros play more or less than 162. He has 192 PA

Default Yordan Alvarez

It will be cool to see if he wins Minor League POY and AL ROY.
He would be the first to do that if he did. It may be a long shot on the Minor League POY though

I’m curious if the buyer will actually pay when auction ends tonight. A chrome base I could see getting up there, but not paper.

I would guess someone thought it was the refractor. I've done that myself a couple times but caught it early enough. I'm glad I did my rainbows early. Think I'll have to give up on the reds I don't have though. Prices getting crazy.

He'll qualify regardless. If someone finishes the season short on PAs, the calculation assumes all PAs up to the 3.1 required PAs per team game are outs. So if his batting average is technically high enough beyond the highest qualifying leader, he can still win the batting title.

and after some crude calculations....

assuming DJ maintains a .338 average (and is the qualifying leader)
Yordan gets 4 PAs per Astros game left to finish the season
Yordan maintains his AB per PA rate (86.89% of PAs are ABs)

Yordan will have to finish the season with a .473 average to beat DJ out for the batting title.

From today forward, he'll have to bat .630.
I could very well have made a mistake and there are otherwise many assumptions...let's just opt for DJ slumping and Yordan killing it.

So if DJ stays at .338 the rest of the season he’d have to bat what exactly the rest of the season?

he'd have to bat .338 to stay at .338 (it's an average)

Yeah, that rule was added in the 90s, IIRC, and it was within a year or two it had an impact. Tony Gwynn missed about 46 games in 1996 and finished with 159 hits in 498 PA, giving him a league-best .353 average. Under the old rule, he would have been SOL for the title. But they added 4 AB to his total to make him official, which would have brought his average down to .350, still ahead of 2nd place, Ellis Burks at .344. So he was given credit for the batting title even though he didn't officially have the official total of official PAs.
