I’m always baffled by people who try to compare deaths of one thing to something else, and use that to claim that one is safer than the other. “Only” 3k people died on 9/11, I guess we shouldn’t have done anything about that, right? Do people realize how dumb those arguments are?

More fear mongering by the media. Can we stop posting stories on how this virus can be deadly? We get it, but that's like ANY virus. Some people feel it and some don't. But spreading articles about worst case scenarios will continue to push towards irrational decisions.

The “media” doesn’t do a story on every single murder in the country, but if the was a cult of serial killers in almost every city in the country that slowly kept gaining members and the number of people the killed was increasing day by day, if the media was warning you about the cult would they be fear mongering?

Would people be saying “what’s the big deal? There’s murders everyday in this country?”

Would law enforcement decide not to share information state to state and not loop in the federal enforcement agencies to help track the cult down and slow their spread because “murders happen daily”.

I could go on, but I prefer to leave this awful “haven’t had my coffee” early morning analogy here.

Get some coffee. Equating a viral disease with a murder cult? Wow...

It's been nice to stay out of this thread for a few days, but I can see things still haven't changed and some people still can't see the REAL problem behind this virus. Yes, maybe the media does focus on the worst case scenario too much, but it's because if they didn't right now, things would get so so so much worse, as too many people disregarded the potential outcomes over the past few weeks despite the evidence from other countries around the world.

Many hospitals are teetering on the brink of being completely overrun already and we're just getting started, and when that happens, the deaths will start to pile up at an alarmingly fast rate. These aren't just deaths that were inevitable like with the Flu where someone just couldn't beat it even with treatments and medical support, there will be thousands deaths of people who would have lived with the proper medical care.

Other viruses don't overwhelm our hospitals, they're built with the capacity to handle all other known illnesses and viruses out there. People don't die from car accidents because the hospital didn't have enough doctors or nurses to care for them or even have an open bed for them.

Once they are beyond capacity and are turning people with the virus away because they have no beds and ventilators left, not only will those people likely die, but so will many other people who have other illnesses and conditions because the care won't be there for them either. So you'll start having people die of every day issues that most people don't die from either.

So people need to stop comparing this to the seasonal Flu or traffic accidents, we get it, there are many more deaths from those things, but the effect those things have on our healthcare systems is extremely minimal to none, as they're built to handle them.

If people want to argue the economics side of things, that's fine, I can at least see where they're coming from. But this nonsense of comparing it to other viruses or deaths just needs to stop, the virus isn't the problem, it's the trickle down effect that it has on our healthcare system.

So the fear mongering of millions of deaths, overrun hospitals and this going into the summer and fall aren't real?

Just to be clear,

You are saying everyone is dumb then, as everyone is just guessing and doing comparative work.

There are plenty of good correlative comparisons. H1N1, where our Lord and Savior Barack Obama stood Idle and 12,500 people died (and that was ok BTW) vs Covid-19 where we had less than 1000 deaths and our country was shut down.

Comparing something completely off kilter, such as 9/11, or I think someone said Tigers in a zoo.....now that I will agree is dumb.

You are comparing the total number of H1N1 deaths to the current number of Covid - 19 . Apples to Oranges

H1N1 deaths were measured over the course of a year. We also had 4 different anti-virals available to treat it.

We’ve had ~750 deaths in the last 4 days and don’t have any type of medication (yet) to help treat. At our current rate we will blow by those death numbers from H1N1 by June 1st, and that’s with the country essentially closed.
