The reason that Fox News and Washington Post called Va immediately is due to the areas that have the highest mail in/early/absentee voting. One of the Presidents top network defenders called Virginia on his personal Twitter immediately, same person also called other states incorrectly as they were hopeful. Northern Virginia firmly has turned the state Blue.

Now I've only ever voted in the same location in my life, and I fill out my ballot and then put it into a machine that I counts my votes immediately (at least I assume it's counted right then and not just stored to be counted later). Which you'd think would then have the entire polling location totals the second voting is finished and could quickly and easily be reported.

If that's the case, how many polling locations don't have these machines and need to be counted in some other slower method?

In particular, what is the counting method used in major population centers as they always seem to be the slowest to return counts?

And why wouldn't the government not find a way to make sure every location has that machine so counts could be known immediately?

Probably a stupid question, but just seems like such an easy fix.
Not a stupid question there are different states methods of tabulating and there is not a national standard.

Fox is the only one I remember seeing having called VA right away, they also were the only ones calling AZ for Biden for awhile

Well I get that, but apparently that's not even how it is throughout a state as I'm in Michigan.

And Detroit is always one of the slowest reporting counties it seems during elections, so it's not like all places in Michigan, have a system that counts each ballot as it's submitted or it could be reported as soon as polls close.

That’s what I’m saying some methods they have to go to a central spot and then they can be tabulated, which makes it easier in some areas than others.

I really did not understand them calling VA, I get that they knew the votes to come in would mainly be for Biden, but still, the whole point of calling a state is who won it based on the votes that have been counted/reported.

It's one of two things, they either really wanted to be the first to call states to be the "top reporters"

Or more likely, they wanted to start the narrative of being fair to call states both ways as they should be called, so when they call states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, before the votes are all tallied, it helped Trump set up his narrative of the democrats trying to steal the election.

And for all I know, my ballot is the same, it's just a fancy high tek machine that I'd assume would count the votes like a scantron would grade a test in school, immediately. But maybe all it does is "accept" a ballot and confirm it's legal and then they take all of them to another place later to do their counting scans.

But if that's actually how it works, I don't understand how the government hasn't realized it would be worth the investment to get one for every polling location to speed up and have more accurate elections. It's mostly a one time cost to set it up, I doubt those machines need to be repaired or replaced all that often.

Was neither of those in my opinion.

In one state the counting at the polling place was shot down by legislature as too rife for fraud.

Crazy that Nevada apparently won't report anymore numbers until Thursday.

We might know Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, NC, and potentially Pennsylvania before Nevada, that might be the state we're waiting on to find out the winner in the end, never saw that coming.

Crapsticks.

I was hoping for some information this morning. All I see is conflicting guesses about what might be.

No way I'm reading 700 or so posts since last night. Is it safe to say a quick recap would include arguing about a bunch of stuff and coming to no conclusions? Or did I miss something important?

Regarding Nevada (this is copied from their Elections Dept Twitter)

Here’s what is left to count:

-Mail ballots received on Election Day
-Mail ballots that will be received over the next week
-Provisional ballots

Ballots outstanding is difficult to estimate in Nevada because every voter was sent a mail ballot. Obviously, not all will vote.

quick recap is.....

Biden has a solid lead in Arizona, a slim lead in Nevada and Wisconsin, he needs to keep all 3.

For sake of argument, let's say Trump wins Pennsylvania (big lead but lot of blue area votes to come in) and NC.

Then it comes down to Michigan and Georgia... if Trump wins both, he wins, if Biden wins one, he wins.

And Biden just made a HUGE jump in Michigan about 30 minutes ago, is only down about 65K votes and still with only 63% reporting in Wayne (aka Detroit), which is the biggest population center in the state by far and is very heavy blue.

Thanks!

But what I meant was a quick recap of the last 700 posts here, rather than of the election.

Was it just 700 posts of arguing with no conclusions made, or did the discussion yield something important?

Have we gotten any word on what the deal in GA is? The NYT needle still has it pointing in Biden's favor for some reason

Probably because the most votes to be reported will still come from heavy blue places like Atlanta.

He still has a big gap to close, but it's not out of the question.

Lol. Me too, mostly. Spent last night with the hubby, mostly trying not to pay much attention to the election. We figured it would be a while until anybody knew much, so the evening would largely be speculation.

It seems that is still the case, haha.
