I have a feeling these are going to be autopenned too. A quick google search shows that he’s used autopen multiple times during his presidency to sign bills into law. And with this being a sealed product, it’s going to be harder to return once opened.

Yeah because of this I went ahead and canceled my order. I think they’ll either be autopen or the resell value will not be very high with fees and all that.

No different than a stamp serving the same purpose, just fancier.

I'm going to the source, I sent an email to the publisher and asking them straight out whether it was a hand signed signature or an autopen, stamp, etc. They can be reached at consumerservices@penguinrandomhouse.com

My Positions CD arrived today, ended up with the blah "Ari" signature in the upper left corner that sort of looks like "Au." At least the Halsey books that also showed up from Book Soup had nice signatures.

Absolutely. There are also secretary signatures as well for Presidents. That has always been an issue for people who collect documents signed by Presidents. A lot can be autopened (I believe) due to the volume of documents signed.

So, I have an update on my second copy of Steve Martin's signed book that was not signed but had the sticker on it from B&N. The Customer Service Rep was going to send another copy out until she realized they were sold out. So she emailed me a return label for the second copy which I sent back on Friday. Get a call today from the same lady saying she has found another copy and will send it to me if I want. So my second book is on its way. Above and beyond. Found an article on B&N about her. Her name is Teleka.

If the Obama turns out to be an autopen, it will be disappointing (but not surprising).

I will rely on the ones that people put up on ebay (hopefully someone opens one) to judge. Pretty obvious if you know what to look for in an autopen.

I will just return them sealed and shake my head.

We shall see sometime next week.

I doubt she's at same level as Ford/Hamill/Fisher, nonetheless many needs her auto to complete their posters/pieces, I guess we will find out on BF.

Now, whether they deliver or not I cannot say ...
The Target page now says "A Promised Land: Deluxe Signed Edition - by Barack Obama (Hardcover)" if anyone was holding out on it. Again, I don't know if they've over sold or will cancel orders or what but still "available to preorder".

I also noticed that the link to the publisher no longer works and if I search google for their link I get a site that says "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later." probably nothing to worry about, publishers are not tech savvy. It shows up in penguin's search results as a broken link. I'd imagine they're just out of stock at the $453 pricing?

The publishers page does appear to be taken down. The 453 price was from the Canadian store so that was not USD. Last night they still had them at 350 USD on the store, but the links are all broken now.

It looks like Amazon has sold out for the time being.

I had no idea they were autopen. I bought one of these and kept it sealed. What a friggin waste of money. Now I'm pissed.

do you have anything to corroborate this? I have compared my copy to tons that have surfaced on ebay and I can always see differences.

He says "I believe" and I would probably agree with you based on this and this.

But most are sold sealed (surprisingly). Could you upload a high res scan of your signature to like imgur and link here? There are telltale signs for autopen we could check for ...

A good idea but I guarantee they're going to assure you that they are signed. Because Obama's rep is going to guarantee that. It goes something like this:

Penguin: "Here's a stack of bookplates/tip-ins that we need Obama to sign."
Obama's Rep: "You got it, wow that is a ton of paper."
Penguin: "Yeah, remember, ten thousand units."
Obama's Rep: "Right, okay, uhhhhhhh sure yeah we'll get these back to you next week."
** takes stack of paper to intern **
Obama's Rep: "No way Obama's going to sit for days signing these. Okay intern, here you go, you put the paper in front of this device and then you stack them here."
** hands the stack back to Penguin **
Penguin: $$$$$$$$
Customer: :-(

And if there are multiple autopens set up with different recorded autographs (sometimes not nefarious to do this, just to parallelize) then you can even find two books with aberrations.

The problem (not a problem) is that most of the buyers of the Michelle Obama books are buying them as gifts. So, yes, they would prefer them to be sealed. Also, 99% of them are not autograph experts or will even suspect anything fishy like an autopen. They just know it was SIGNED and that's good enough.

The recipients of these gifts are even more clueless and are happy to have a Michelle Obama auto on their shelf! Win-win-win for everyone involved!

Unless there is some massive media coverage on the Barack Obama sigs, I think it will follow the same pattern as above.

I think they are saying those two examples are not auto-pen.

I'd be interested in more info on this too. I haven't heard about these being auto-penned. I've only seen 10 or 12 examples but all appear to be different.

A few from eBay:
