Probably a combination of things, one being this set was hurt by its own popularity and Topps was caught with its pants down and is playing catchup at all costs.

Current thoughts on P2020

I was an early adaptor starting from card #1 and planning to build the entire set, slow and steady. I continue on that path. There have been times (earlier) when I've debated selling all of them for a profit, and times (more recently) when I've debated throwing in the towel. During either time I try to focus on why I started this - the cards are very unique, and I enjoy looking at them. I look forward to displaying them in different combinations on my wall when the set is done. I can't say that about Topps Chrome or Bowman or the next release that will end up sitting in a white box forever.

I try my best to not get annoyed by things I can't control. I have card 208 in hand and order up to 256. It doesn't bother me if it takes 3 days or 3 months to get these cards because I'm not trying to flip. I avoid the FB group because it's toxic. I avoid resellers because it's an unnecessary hassle for pocket change. I'm not bothered by tiny surface scuffs on one touches or slight off centering of the cards, nobody's perfect. Companion cards were overwhelming in volume and cost, so now I stay focused on the main set plus only 2 artists because I think they are fantastic.

In my humble opinion, if everyone focused a bit more on the art and less on the complaints this thread and would be better for it.

Great post, can I ask what two artists and what you love about their cards to date? Maybe the top three cards in hand so far of each of them?

I'm still at 0 for any companion cards or artist autos. The only one thats been tempting is the Shore Griffey auto with tears. Don't like it enough to spend $400 on it though

The companions that I personally like the most and limit myself to are Ermsy because of his whimsical style, and Saladeen because I've met him at an art show and appreciate his story around the moneybears. I can easily see how others would be partial to Thiele, JK5, Chang, or Mr C, but for my own sanity I had to draw a line somewhere. I think what Tyson is doing crossing over to NBA is a great move for him personally, and I'd be shocked if Panini doesn't have something similar in the works for an NBA and NFL set.

The artist that has grown on me the most is Naturel. The minimalist triangle style seemed too basic to me at first, but now that I see his set starting to come together I like it for how clean and crisp his style transforms each card.

I do remember Ermsy posted his rendition of a Jordan rookie awhile back. If he ever released that as a card, I'd be all over it.

I really like and agree with your post. The only reason that I continue on with the FB group is because of the artist interaction. Otherwise, half of the group is just a bunch of complainers who were trying to get rich at the wrong time and are having trouble digging themselves out. And if they aren't happy, nobody should be happy. I do my best to ignore that stuff.

I also agree with your comments on Naturel's cards. I didn't "get it" in the beginning, but now his are some of the cards that I look most forward to. Can't wait to see the whole Griffey this afternoon.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but exclusive licenses ensure this won't be happening until those contracts aren't renewed (never).


To my knowledge it's:
MLB (exclusive Topps)
NHL cards (exclusive UD), stickers (exclusive Topps)
NBA & NFL (exclusive panini)


Now, there's tons of CFL/European stuff that the above doesn't apply to but ...

That means that Topps can't print the logos and team names which will likely be very problematic for iconic cards.

I don't see Transformers reference but I am not well versed on that subject.

What I do know is JK5 needs to make a coloring book!
