Most of the demand for Mbappe is being driven by flippers/investors who don't know that much about soccer, not collectors.

Ask them who he played for before PSG bought him and they won't have a clue. Ask them to name five other clubs in Ligue 1, and they won't have a clue. Ask them which USMNT prospect's dad formerly starred for PSG and is now president of his country and they won't have a clue.

I've been collecting soccer cards since the 90's, and I've seen dozens of players like him come and go. He's a good young prospect, but nothing more at this point in time.

This is great!!! Been awesome seeing so many other folks jump in and talk about soccer stuff. Love all the different opinions from everyone.
Maybe someday we will get our own Soccer Forum and not share it with the "other sports" LOL
Let's keep the discussions going

Good to see a long time collector of soccer cards

But to not see how special Mbappe is and just label him as "hust another prospect" seems a little harsh

I agree! Regardless of opinion, I Iove the discussions and it would be AWESOME to make a separate soccer forum

I know I’m jumping in a lot more since I’m barely leaving the house these days!

I’m starting to feel like Mbappe’s attorney , but the signs are just so clear I feel (along with clearly growing number of people who are putting their money where their mouth is) that the reasons for going after him are fairly obvious at this point.

Yes, investors are pursuing him, but that means they believe his cards will appreciate. They will only appreciate if he performs, and so far he is delivering. Could he fall flat? Sure, but the buy in is still relatively low on many of his cards to take that chance. The soccer market is rising in general and smart money will go toward those who already are the hobby kings (Messi/CR7) or those that will become hobby kings. Who will become the next hobby king? This is the question.

Everyone has to come from somewhere. Everyone was a rookie at one time. There is a short-sighted tendency to compare veterans with a dazzling resume to players who haven’t had the years to prove themselves yet. Yes, Mbappe is a prospect and his legacy isn’t established, but do you want to try to buy a PSA 10 Topps chrome 2017-18 Topps Chrome refractor after it is established? I sure as heck won’t be able to afford that.

Since you have been collecting since the 90’s, I’m sure you got in on Messi and CR7 before prices began to shoot through the roof (and still have plenty of room to go IMO) and I envy you for that. The window will be closing soon on getting in on Mbappe at reasonable prices. A few hundred dollars on some premium Mbappe cards could pay off huge dividends long term.

Lastly, the reason why non-collectors and people who know nothing about soccer are throwing money at him is because they have actually HEARD of him. If you have to be a die hard soccer fan to know how talented a player is, that player will likely never be worth anything. This is true of all sports, not just soccer. You don’t have to do much digging to understand his potential. This is the reason why there is such a steep drop off from Messi and CR7 and the rest of the pack right now. EVERYONE on the planet knows who they are. The fact that Mbappe has a monster reputation as such a young player and a World Cup already under his belt bodes very well for his future hobby status.

It doesn't feel low. In fact, it feels extremely high to me. I sold my one Mbappe card (a superfractor) and I'm going back to buying only Ronaldo/Messi. I admittedly am not a soccer expert, but I know a GOAT (or two) when I see one.

I dig on Mbappe’s potential, but if I was lucky enough to pull the superfractor I would have admittedly done the same! I could never buy in on a player for that amount, but then again I’m on a teacher’s salary

I bought up some Mbappe fairly low and hope to sell them later to keep the collection rolling. One day I will liquidate everything and the proceeds will be going to the kiddos (full transparency), so my collecting is an entertaining means to an end. Money put in on Ronaldo/Messi will never be wasted, just like LeBron/Jordan. Very wise move

Actually no, I didn't "get in" on Messi and CR7 before their prices went through the roof, because I couldn't care less about the future value of the cards I buy. I only collect what I like, and rarely sell anything in my collection. In fact, probably the only Messi and CR7 cards I have in my collection are base cards from 2014 WC Prizm and 2017 Nobility. I primarily collect all-time greats, so I've got mutiple autos of Pele, Maradona, Baggio, Beckenbauer, Gullit, Klinsmann, Matthaus, etc.

For Mpabbe to live up to his current hype, he has to:

#1 - Become the undisputed leader for the French National Team (i.e. like Zidane was), and lead them to several more Finals, with at least one more win. He was good at WC 2018 (four goals in 7 matches), but not great.

#2 - Win the Champions League with PSG, and/or lead an EPL or La Liga giant to multiple UCL titles (i.e. one of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man. United, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal). He was great for Monaco in 16-17, scoring six goals in 6 knockout stage matches, but since then he has only scored one goal in 6 matches in the knockout stages with PSG.

#3 - Score 20+ goals for 10+ seasons in La Liga or the EPL

#4 - Win multiple Ballon D'Or's (so far he's got a 4th, 6th, and 7th).

Now it's not impossible that he accomplishes all of the above, but collectors have already priced his cards at a level that they think it's certain that he will. That's the point I've been trying to make....

I actually bought it and then sold it 2 months later for 2.5x. I'm generally not a flipper, but figured it could find a better home.

The amazing thing is that accomplishing that list only gets him halfway to Messi/CR7 status on a club basis.

Fair enough! Well done on those transactions, hard to beat a flip like that. Nothing wrong with flipping to fuel a PC or just for the cash

Ronaldo's first three years 11th, 20th, 14th..Mbappe may be underappreciated

I respect that you are a collector, I used to collect just for the sake of collecting and loved that too! Once kids came along, I decided to use my passion for cards as something I could pass on and eventually decided to pass on the cash rather than the cards. I’m having a blast doing it so it’s not entirely selfless Sounds like you have a VERY impressive collection btw.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think that Mbappe will equal or surpass Messi or Ronaldo, that is highly unlikely. I do think he has a good chance to dominate the post Messi/Ronaldo landscape however, which would make his star shine brighter and really make a name for himself.

You have valid points on him living up to the hype and I certainly don’t have a crystal ball, I just think that for someone whose plan is to buy in low and sell for a profit later, Mbappe is a very good investment.

Ronaldo & Messi are Generational players that should NOT be compared too. That was them going head 2 head in La Liga year after year, and Ballon d'ore fights with FIFA Politics involved year after year which made them polarizing, with Ronaldo always playing the Arrogant Heal to Messi's quiet weasel faux personality. I don't see the new breed bringing this, it seems like we will get a Luka Modric winning the Ballon' (A snooze fest player)

Yes we need our own section. We literally took over this part of the forum which says racing golf and other sports. I was finding it difficult to invite other collectors over here because of this.

@houdini please consider this.

Any reason why the rated rookies aren’t worth much?

Very much depends on the player and the card. Parallels have done nothing but rise, especially holos and low serial numbers. I honestly Haven’t seen any big sales on base even if it’s Sancho and Gem Mint. Vinicius and Havertz are starting to get some love along with Sancho as well.

This could all change though because right now people are ripping and flipping ALOT of Donruss. Some PSA 10 copies of players from this set could definitely see a nice spike down the road as soccer in general continues to gain popularity.

Definitely just the optic though, regular Donruss will always be a very distant second, even the press proofs.
