Plus, there is the fact that Mattingly (hardly a common player) has a black stamp as per the advertisement ... unless that was just a promo for the commercial, which could be the case.

I guess this whole thing may remain a mystery for quite some time. Thanks for your input - I've learned a lot from your monster breaks!
correct, it is per card-basis only
not player

LOL, if I were to have written this back then, it would have been more like: "Topps says they had buybacks, but no one has ever pulled one!"

There is something to this. I pulled an 88 Madduxux red - which is sweet because he is a great HOF pitcher so I wanted to see what else was out there for him. Just a search of topps Madduxux buybacks and there are a ton of silver out there, about 4 blue and only one other red. Did not see a black but I was really only looking at 88 buybacks. I find it very hard to believe that silver is only secondary to gold. Seems like it goes gold, red, blue, silver, black - and black is for second tier players? I did get an 87 black of Eddie Murray but most seems to be scrubs.

sure, that may be misleading, I get that, can't argue that
but often on mock-ups they have cards that never end up existing

plus there will be series 2 and update coming, don't forget, so waaaaaay more buybacks coming
could be many of the blacks will be in those releases
edited for accuracy

It has been nearly a year since I wrote this, and still, only 1 black Canseco has shown itself, and almost all the others have all but dried up. I wonder how many more are out there.

I don't know what to expect pulling up an old thread, but figured that it was better asking on this than to start a new thread that will probably fall on deaf ears anyway.

I'm slowly inputting my collection into card ladder, so I was looking at some cards that I haven't looked at for eight years. I have two gold stamped 65th anniversary buybacks that don't have the 1/1 stamp underneath. Was this the case with others? It's definitely not silver, very much gold, and it certainly isn't black, blue or red.

Edit: guess I should have checked eBay a little deeper. Seems to be a few others.

What would one like this go for? I've had in in a binder for years...

Most that I've seen and/or had have not had any serial numbering.
