Best Deployment story: I dont really have stories. I have been to Khandar for 6 months and Manas AB for 6 months. I got to meet and eat lunch with Daughtry and Gabrial iglasias. And in afghan i got to meet Vince Mcmahon, The bella twins, and Kofi Kingston (for any wrestling fans out there). I left the wire twice and saw a little combat but nothing crazy. If I happen to win donate anything to someone more deserving and by that I mean theres guys/girls who have been deployed WAY more than me and have seen WAY more. Thanks for everyones service!

Best Deployment story:

Back in 03' (while deployed to Kuwait), 13 of my 16 man team had gone to lunch while 3 of us hung back at the shop to continue with some work. A reporter came in to our hanger with a photographer and told us that she was with Life Magazine (for whatever reason, I didn't believe her). So she ended up asking two of us some questions followed by a photo by the photographer. It was cool at the time and a little story to share with the guys. Fast forward to Dec 2010 (3 years out of the service), I was at my girlfriends house and I was checking my email. I had an email labeled "did you know about this?". I opened the link and there was this:

I had completely forgotten that this existed. It's pretty cool looking back and having something positive from that experience.

Branch: US Air Force
Dates of Service: 9 Jun 02 - 25 Sep 12; standing by for USAFR appt.
Rank at separation/current: O3

Best Deployment story:
So I deployed in support of the AF Security Forces squadron (Cops). We were invited by our counterparts on another base for dinner with AFOSI (like CSI for you CIVs). Anyways, they had made dinner for us, Iraqi BBQ style... realize this is my 1st deployment to SWA (Southwest Asia)... so i'm going down the chow line and pick up some meat. Looks like good ol' fashion USDA grade crap meat they sell at the commissary. Next, I pile on some stuff that looks like canned salsa (maybe like Pace Picante or something). Finally, I saw "mashed potatoes" and got me two scoops, because I love mashed taters!

Finally sit down and start eating... take a huge ol' bite of my "beef"... "hmm, that tastes flipin weird"... next, have some "salsa". Tastes nothing like salsa... more like a bunch of tomatoes.... finally, oh yea, can't wait to eat my "mashed potatoes"... and you have no idea how excited I am to eat em. Take a huge ol' bite and just about gag eating it. Needless to say, I ate it all anyways to not offend our Iraqi 'terps.

We're leaving the compound and my NCO says... "did anyone else think those were some f'd up mashed potatoes?" My supervisor (O4) says, what are you talking about? That was lamb, field fresh tomatoes, and humus. My response... "yea, I was eating and thinking these are some #@#@#@#@ed up mashed potatoes too". The entire HMMWV erupts into laughter and we're rolling laughing for the 15 minute cruise back to base.
Nice, fellow intel service member. Good stuff.

Getting to sit in first class from Norfolk, VA to Kuwait. So THAT'S what it's like to ride in style. While I had interesting times and met great people across all of the services, I really don't have a 'best' story. Oh and that's over 3 deployments. I did get to see Toby Keith and Five Finger Death Punch (both were awesome!). Got to meet some WWE wrestlers and I played golf in Kuwait. Harsh, I know

My utmost respect to past and present service members and also to all of us American's doing the 'day to day' grind!!!

Best deployment story was probably a flight in Afghanistan when I witnessed the circle of life. Got additional tasking to recover an Angel, and received even more tasking to pick up a female with high NATO standing that was in labor and ended up giving birth in my helicopter. Life and death on one 9 hour night flight.
WTF? Love the Angel part of that story (RIP), but I'm assuming the NATO leader wasn't U.S.? I didn't think the U.S. deployed preggers personnel.

thanks but don't really need a care package

Branch: AF retired
Dates of Service: Jan 1991- Jan 2011
Rank at separation/current: MSgt
MOS/AFSC: 3C2X1 (Tech Control)
Best Deployment story: it was my first deployment and first time overseas (Tuzla Bosnia)...I noticed the CC was renovating his office and asked the Orderly Room if they needed any help and they asked me to move the huge, new, very expensive copier/printer that cost like $5K. I moved it to his new area and plugged it in without looking at the voltage selector. Pop pop fizz fizz and a small fire started. Boy was he pissed and the OR had no printer for weeks...
