Apparently Reiner’s wife photographed him for the cover of The Art of the Deal. How random is that?

Reiner’s run from 84-95 was amazing and should be studied. He fell off after that and I don’t think made another good movie but the 8 films he made during that timespan (minus North) were all crazy good.

Sure, I didn’t see eye to eye with him politically—he was definitely on the TDS kick and pretty vocal about it—but I don’t hold that against him. His rhetoric and opinions were never hateful or "far-left-field" (or whatever you want to call it), and I fully recognize that he was a great director. Sadly, some people just can’t separate the art from the politics.

That doesn’t make it any less unfortunate.

I lived in a rural town, and was the same age as the kids in Stand By Me when it came out. I still love that movie.

If any person gets to the point where they are actively hoping for someone to be murdered, or else are happy after a murder has occurred, the state of the outside world is the least of their problems.

When Charlie Kirk was brutally killed earlier this year, here was Rob Reiner's take:

“Absolute horror and I unfortunately saw the video of it. It’s beyond belief what happened to him. That should never happen to anybody. I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable. That’s not a solution so solving problems. And I felt like what his wife [Erika] said at the service at the memorial they had, was exactly right. I’m Jewish but I believe in the teachings of Jesus and I believe in ‘do unto others’ and I believe in forgiveness and what she said to me was beautiful. She forgave his assassin. And I think that is admirable."

Son in custody. We'll probably never get the whole story - a mess all around.

Just awful, right down the street from me, too.

Huge fan of his films, especially all those early ones which had such an impact on me.

Mental issues fueled by drug addiction I assume is part of it. There’s stories of him having drug fueled moments where he destroys things and doesn’t even remember it happening. Really sucks for the family.

Apparently he threw a temper tantrum the night before at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party.

Dang, and the Simpson murders were in Brentwood too. I'm sure the entire neighborhood is shook up over this.

I love him in that movie!! I don't know the exact dialogue but I know the scene you are talking about:

Mental health is no joke. Quite often this is a hereditary issue.

That's insane.

In late 2024, Reiner posted on Bluesky that he was taking a break from social media and checking into a facility to "heal my pain" and escape online harassment.

So, Reiner was managing stress, setting boundaries, and you equate that to having mental illness and mention it in the same sentence as his son's severe mental health issues?

I said "a bit." Why did you disregard his lunatic, impulsive tweets?

And, yes, typically when you check yourself a mental facility it implies something is mentally wrong.

Don't be so sensitive. Mental illness is a big problem in our society right now.

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist. No need to remind me about mental illness.

Being politically outspoken is not a mental health disorder.

I've been a Research Psychologist for 20 years. Since neither of us are actually licensed Psychologists or Psychiatrists, no need to swing the D.

It's certainly a symptom depending on what you write, how often, how aggressive your takes are. As is checking yourself into a mental facility.

Again, you're being sensive and overly-protective.

What might have once been considered "lunatic, impulsive tweets" has kinda lost all meaning in recent years.

If you're referring to the President, while I may agree with some of his content, I disagree with other parts that are certainly impulsive. His tweet about Reiner's death was abhorent.

I’m being curious and stating facts. And yes, I am protective when I feel mental health concerns are being mislabeled and misunderstood.

Also, if you work in the world of mental health as you claim, you of all people should know that you don’t tell someone to not be so sensitive. It comes across as dismissive and minimizing.
