NFL Films put together a great video years ago with the greatest Football Players. The debate was Walter Payton VS Jerry Rice for the GOAT. All around player.

Walter Payton could catch. Mike Ditka said, for every bit as great a runner Payton was. He was an even better blocker. As a player, not just a RB, Payton is my GOAT and gets a ton of hobby love. But I am a homer.

At the time of his retirement, Payton ranked No. 1 in NFL history in carries (3,838), rushing yards (16,726), rushing touchdowns (110), receptions by a running back (492), receiving yards by a running back (4,538) and total yards from scrimmage (21,264). Most games with at least 100 yards (77). Most seasons with at least 1,000 yards (10). Most rushing yards in a game (275). Consecutive starts by a skills player (178).

And he still holds the records for: Consecutive regular season starts by a running back: 170, from December 7, 1975 to September 20, 1987. Most consecutive seasons leading the league in rushing attempts (4). Games with 100 or more yards from scrimmage gained, career (108). Passing touchdowns by a non-quarterback (8)
Amazing run.

Rice has a similar, possibly even more impressive resume (I'm a homer, yes) so much so that in the pass happy, 17 game season NFL today it's still hard to imagine someone surpassing his stats. His totals/records are still so crazy that we talk about potential future Hall of Famer Mike Evans tying ONE of his records as a notable achievement.

And he did not just accumulate stats - he had a 1200 yard season at age 40.

Justin Jefferson is currently averaging an NFL record 95.9 yards per game, but for him to surpass Rice’s 22,895 career receiving yards record, Jefferson would have to maintain that pace into his mid-30s.

I'm just not sure we'll ever see another Jerry.

Correct, actually he was considered a Fullback most of his career, but we all know the Goat FB is Mike Alstott, so by default, Jim Brown gets the Goat RB nod

Well if that's your argument, Daryl Johnston would block circles all around Lo Neal

And last I checked, Lo Neal's digits are bare of any Super Bowl hardware

Your move, Shemp.

Sure bet GOATs at their position (not debatable, to me)

Quarterback - Tom Brady
Running Back - Jim Brown
Wide Receiver - Jerry Rice
Tight End - Tony Gonzalez

Defense:

Linebacker - Lawrence Taylor
Defensive End - Reggie White
Safety - Ronnie Lott
Cornerback - Deion Sanders

Every other position not mentioned, it's a crap shoot
This seems spot on. Isn't Larry Allen considered the GOAT o-lineman?

There are lots of guys that tried hard and made their mark. Why would we want to pick just one? Guard vs Center vs Tackle

So many fun individuals

It's wild that no one mentioned Willie Mays in regards to the GOAT of MLB -- he is in fact the GOAT, if you consider that Babe Ruth played pre-integration. The 1960s is also considered the golden era of baseball -- Mays, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax, etc.

There is no way you can convince me anyone was a better RB than Barry Sanders. Perhaps peak, Adrian Peterson, but that's it for me. There's never been anyone like him before or since. Now you can argue his inability to run inside or lack of power and it's true but that was offset by his home run ability on every play.

Yes, Brady is the GOAT when you consider position, accomplishments, longevity, etc but peak wise, you can throw in Rice and LT in the GOAT discussion. I mean straight up, LT peak wise was probably the GOAT, he was that dominant.

Jerry Rice is the GOAT.

He didn't wear Uggs, Didn't get cosmetic plastic surgery, didn't ask his son to kiss him on the lips, didn't cry every play to get rules changed at his position eliminating the ability for players to play defense, and most importantly he doesn't collect sports cards (what kind of weirdo does that?).
