Depends on what you go to college for. I know some people who have a specialized 2 year degree that make more than someone with a master’s degree with a worthless major.

For the half-century or more, it was common to mock those who attended college just to find a spouse or get their "MRS degree" rather than focusing solely on getting the most out of their education.

I still think kids in school should focus on their schoolwork, but I'm also coming to see the college environment as one of the few remaining "third spaces" in society where people can meet and form organic relationships. I met my wife at college and didn't think anything of it. Now, watching so many people outside of the college campus struggle with loneliness and feeling like they have no hope for ever finding a partner, I'm starting to think that we may have underestimated the value of the ol' "MRS degree."

I read something interesting about third spaces recently. Very interesting. Sad to see what's become of our society. So many things we took for granted in the 90s are now foreclosed to so many.

I don't know if it's that or how society is these days. As somebody who is in the dating scene, it's not good. I think a lot of it has to do with the rise of social media and OF. People don't know how to communicate face to face, its all social media and text.

Also, a lot of damaged people running around these days.

I wouldn't have had the path to my job without it.

I also don't use any of my degrees at my job other than maybe "soft skills" or indirect skills I gained while getting my degrees.

I think the best part of it was it taught me "how to think" about certain things if that makes sense?

I'm old, though, "the kids" may feel differently.

It's always weird to see what carries over from college to career. My bachelor's is a degree in ministry—not exactly a hot degree. But the public speaking and relational skills I developed have opened more doors than anything else.

Intrigued.

I remember taking a class on debating policy and the professor arranged debates but it wasn't really about policy - it was about argumentation, and learning that being prepared to defend attacks on your position is probably equally, if not more, important than making your argument for something.

I actually got a class to surrender once. But I have OCD and over-prepare for things.

I'm not debating policy for a living, but I do have to argue, make a cases for things all day and the skills are directly applicable.

I voted "It can be but it's not automatic".

It really depends on what jobs you want to do and/or apply for.

A college degree is absolutely worth it. There are avenues now to where college does not cost a lot. Go through CC and then transfer to a public school.

Pick a good school that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and know what you want to do. Don’t go there to skate through classes and party. The people that say college degrees are useless are the ones that don’t know how to use it or don’t put in enough work to find themselves a job with it.

Just because you graduate with a degree doesn’t mean you are ‘done’, but it certainly opens up doors that would have previously been shut for you.

Why not? Isn’t this a thread about getting unearned credits?

It's pretty useful when applying for a job that requires a college degree.
