Interesting -- I didn't know Fleer got in trouble for that.

Yes, the other manufacturers were certainly pissed about Topps’ “special arrangement”. So some did what Fleer tried here from time to time.

Essentially the prospectors and flippers determined a lot of how the manufacturer war played out because they saw a way to profit amongst themselves… just from airbrushing and photoshop.

I know this is some fringe stuff but i always loved the 1991 Fleer All-Stars inserts. Black borders, super condition sensitive and just beautiful.

An amazing list of sets and fun poll results. I selected 1996 Select Mirror Gold simply due to the fact that it has produced the highest public sale of any single 1990’s insert card to date (to the best of my knowledge) with a Jeter at $200k.

No offense to any of the listed choices - they are all noteworthy and desirable. I chose other - 1999 Fleer Mystique Established /100. I don’t even own one, but love the design and execution.

Holy mackerel. Remember, though, it is a parallel -- not an insert:

1999 EX Century base is the best looking 90s card, and possibly best ever looking card design. And base looks significantly better than the Credentials

Thanks! I dig the methodology. Do you weigh the special 92-96 period differently at all, where Jeter collectors focus their most rabid efforts?

Beauty for sure but I cut the minimum checklist off at 20 players pretty arbitrarily. And the two sets listed in the poll that barely made the cut were the least popular for best overall insert. At the same time, the minimum checklist rule has left out a lot of incredible candidates,
like this one.

Fair point for sure but these were my thoughts that I posted in response to a similar comment:

"I'll call it a distinction without a difference for the purposes of this poll for the following reasons:

1. Parallels of base card, parallels of inserts, and pure base inserts are all treated mostly the same in 90s circles...as inserts.

2. Parallels were inserted to be hits, as important to opening a pack as any standalone insert.

3. Even the pure inserts in this poll are actually parallels of a base insert or a more common version of the insert."

Tried to find a prettier card, couldn't. Though I do prefer the EC from 1998 way way way more.

Of all the sets that I wish Barry Bonds had been included in, this is number one and it's not particularly close. I saw the whole set at the national last year and just kept staring as I baffled at how my favorite player was not included. These cards are incredible.

That's what I voted for. The card is the complete package -- embossed, atomic refractor, die cut, and cool graphics.

In no particular order:

fleer brilliants 24k golds

Fleer masterpiece 1/1’s (especially flair showcase versions) with the purple embossed “the ONLY one of one masterpiece”

Skybox metal universe gem masters 1/1’s

98 EX Essential Credentials Now

Skybox Star Rubies

98 Crusade Reds aren’t my favorite design-wise but make the list purely due to how many people love them

99 Fleer Tradition Starting 9 /9

Could list another 7-10 easily, that period from 1997ish-2001 was loaded with amazing releases. It was awesome to have multiple card companies competing for collectors’ business. In my opinion those years were the hobby at its modern era peak-the need to one-up the competition incentivized bold designs and risk taking in a way that we may never see again in this era of exclusive licensing agreements. The last 2020s hobby box I ripped was probably >2 years ago, but I’ve easily ripped 40-50 hobby boxes from that late 90s sweet spot between then and now. So much more fun to open

So many great options. Went with Essential Credentials by a smidge over Crusade and PMG. Not part of the game, but I'd put the basketball 98-99 Essential Credentials way ahead of the baseball ones still.

Why basketball over baseball on these - aren't they the same design?

1998 Leaf Fractal Materials die-cuts Z2-Axis /20 Wood cards will always be a top 5 for me.
