If I did the math correctly on Hobby, you have basically 40k total parallels (across Base + the 3 Hobby inserts). So if 2 per box, 20k total boxes of Hobby, or 1/2 of what was produced in Euro?

Crazy pricing at $370 on Panini's website today. This will sit for a long time.

Even Cyrus had to add one of his jersey promos to try and get people to buy this junk. That's a good sign but still crazy anyone falls for that promo smh

When the first few breaks on release day can't be filled even with breaker promos and breakers are immediately offering to sell sealed cases, it is pretty safe to say that a product missed the mark.

Just wait until they have to open it. The modern break product needs to have parallel volume to distract enough from underlying metrics or chase-worthy SP hits/autos in enough volume to garner attention. Otherwise it's very hard to get people to continue to throw good money at bad. And the only way these breaks can be priced realistically is the chase spots for hyped rookies or the big autos (Messi, Ronaldo, etc...). Plus, Maradona stickers will only last for so long... and the volume has certainly taken some shine off of that jewel.

The smart ones try to get a nice volume of their product listed/sold quickly. Run the gimmicks fast. Get it moving.

People buying into these react three times to a product:

1. Hype on announcement/checklist - what can I chase? Who is in it?
2. When they see it - how "loaded" is it? And quality (because everything should be PSA 10).
3. When they see after market singles prices - "wait... Kabooms sell for HOW much?! ... How do you spell that? R-a-e-b-i-g-e-r?"

Right now we'll be at #2 for this. And I don't think it will go well. And for number 3, guessing mostly based on #2 (and also mosaic historically) that won't provide the bump.

I know Topps has its own issues, but at current price points, Topps soccer products are preferable to Panini soccer products in basically every area. Card stock quality, design quality, price, appearance, checklists, photography, etc.

Donruss, Score, all the Mosaic, the unaffordable high end stuff; not much value in Chronicles but it's at least a fun rip; Obsidian looks good but is especially pricey given all the QC issues; Premier League products are okay for getting certain non-UEFA club competition players.

For PC purposes, I'm taking Topps products 95% of the time.

I say all that because this product is illustrative of how gross this hobby can be.

Rant over.

I love the top loading of all the silvers and mosaic cards, and breakers tell the audience that it’s a “great pull”

The cards don't sell because there's no collectors.
Almost zero demand for every player.

No team/player collectors.

I was only 1/2 paying attention to a break, but noticed a couple of zero #'d card boxes too. I thought I must be mistaken and had planned to go back to confirm, but perhaps my vision was just fine.

What do you mean $150 a box?!?! BO got a deal for ya! Only $500 a box! Between soccer and 2022 football BO setting new records for ripping people off!

https://www.blowoutcards.com/2021-22...hobby-box.html

Believe it or not there is a company with a better price! Only 3 left though at $550 per box! Better hurry! I can't post their info though because you don't want to show competitors websites on BO.

That's absolutely not true.

I think a majority of actual collectors are primarily team and/or player collectors. I know I am, and I've been collecting soccer cards since the 1994 World Cup.

It's all the breakers/gamblers/flippers who care only about making a quick profit and know next to nothing about soccer that are chasing "hot" young players.

I've pretty much being buying Iniesta / Modric / Muller, KDB and the occasional Lewa for the past couple of years from older and current sets, and a bunch of vintage. (...and Leeds, of course). I did spend pretty big on a nice Haaland a year and a bit ago. My biggest modern RC holding is Foden, I've got a considerable collection of Rated Rookies of his in various shapes and sizes, and a pile of Prizm most of which were pulled by myself back when it released (and it was going for pennies)

I'm not going to turn my nose up at a nice RC of course, but I have no interest at all in paying world cup winner prices for a kid with 3 minutes of experience.

If that were true then the prices would be different.

I used to have to outbid on a lot mediocre players just because other collectors were collecting the team/country. Not anymore unless /10 or less.

Anyway, ugliest logo ever and cards look the same as previous mosaic.

What Foden RRs do you have? I just picked up a black velocity /25 in a PSA 9

I can tell you I'm planning to pay around what 2018 WC Prizm goes for and it probably won't be enough.

First Tapia auto on eBay and it's over 50. I've gotten Gold Prizm autos for less than that.

I'll add this....most of the newer soccer card collectors (i.e. anybody who started collecting soccer cards since the pandemic started) are generally pretty clueless about both soccer and soccer cards.

The reality is, soccer doesn't produce anyway near as many high-value "superstars" as other sports....there have been only four over the past 20 years (Messi, CR7, Mbappe, and Haaland)...all of them strikers.

Goalkeepers and defenders are irrelevant within the hobby....and there haven't been any superstar midfielders since the Beckham/Zidane/Lampard/Gerrard/Vieira generation retired.

Most players, even the good ones, still end up being cogs in the wheel (Modric is a good example) whose cards are barely treated better than commons. A big part of the problem is that good young players end up getting funneled to the same big clubs where they all end up fighting with each other for playing time. Examples of this are what has happened to Werner/Haavertz/Pulisic at Chelsea, and Ferran Torres and Grealish at Man City. All of them would have been much better off staying with their original clubs where they played every week.

So investing in hot young soccer players is a fools errand, because the chances of anybody emerging to become a hobby superstar with high-value cards are infinitesimal, probably less than .1 % (i.e. 1 out of 1000). Most simply end up fading into the woodwork.

Agree that midfielders historically have not received the hobby attention they deserve, but not sure that dynamic still holds. Guys like Pedri, Bellingham, Wirtz, Gavi are getting tons of hobby attention (rightly so). Wouldn't say that new entrants to the hobby are clueless because they are buying into these guys. Quite the opposite, I would argue that it is about time, and kudos for seeing past the traditional counting stats that undervalued guys like Xavi, Iniesta, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, Kante, Muller, etc.
