100% agreed with this, I've been amazed which how much progress he's made as a GM. He was dealt a pretty terrible situation tbh and almost every single move he's made has turned out to be a good one so far. He's not afraid to make controversial decisions and he's certainly not going to let an agent wrestle him into a deal he doesn't want to make

It sounds like the conflict isn't as much about the money, but rather the years. Kap wants a short bridge deal (still being handsomely paid, of course) so he can hit free agency ASAP and cash in on another big payday. The Wild want him locked up as long as possible to avoid having to compete with other teams' offers down the road. And they've been willing to pay handsomely for that, already having made multiple offers in the 7-8 year, $9 million range Logic would say the two sides eventually end up meeting in the middle at maybe 5 years, but so far Kap/agent haven't budged an inch. But Guerin isn't going to blink either, and it sounds like Kap/agent are still sticking at a massive payday. So who knows where we end up

8 year contract gets him to 32 y.o.
I doubt that anyone is bucking up really big at that point so any long term deal will probably cost Guerin at least $9.5M AAV. But a 5 year bridge with a backloaded contract paying out in years 3, 4 and 5 might do the trick. This link is interesting. https://zonecoverage.com/2021/wild/a...-and-the-wild/ Now if Kirill doesn't want to stay in Minny then it doesn't really matter. |

Kaprizov has also been clear that he wants to and expects to compete for Russia in the 2022 Olympics. While there seems to be a "soft" agreement in place between the NHL, NHLPA and IOC, there are nagging issues that linger. Kaprizov waited years before entering the NHL. Finally came and delivered. He has little risk here leaving and coming back as an UFA in a (expected) bigger cap era.

According to Michael Russo from The Athletic, CSKA Moscow has stated that Kaprizov won't be playing there this season so that hopefully clears the path somewhat to eventually get him back to Minnesota.

CSKA/KHL already announced they never offered him and he wasn't signing there. The only deadline that matters is if he gets signed before the season training camp begins.

Played one Covid-shortened season and got paid $9 schmill per for 5. Not sure Billy had a lot of choice here though. KK gets paid.
Unfortunately the Wild have 7 UFAs and 3 RFAs next year and $12M- $14M + in dead cap with the buyouts of Suter and Parise over the next 3 years. Goligoski and his $5M will be gone next year, but this group will need a top goalie. Paying Cam Talbot almost $4M for 2 more years hurts big time. The Thrill will be fun to watch, but what will the rest of the team look like around him? |

Kaprizov on whether he ever planned to play in the KHL: “no chance.” Guerin joked, “you shouldn’t answer that. You’re going to blow it for the next contract negotiation.”

5 years and The Thrill is outta Minny in a hurry as a UFA. Sad, but likely just the way she goes. |

Too bad he didn’t go back to Siberia. Beers will be $22 to keep his pool boy employed.
