High value gets more scrutiny, so hopefully whoever reviews the return uses some common sense. Onus should be on the buyer to prove it is trimmed.

I has a pretty similar eBay issue except the buyer said he found a better price and was rejected. After 3 weeks, the graded card kept going down so he asked eBay for a refund because he found a better price. I offered the market price which I shouldn't have and he accepted. For some reasons, he didn't go, or press the accept button after a week. I asked eBay why there was no resolution on my refund. I stated that the buyer found a better price after 3 weeks. eBay told me that the buyer can't ask for a refund on market value items. So my sale price stood with no refund. This was 1 1/2 months ago.

Also when you get someone on the phone especially in this case never just talk to the first "rep" you get. They are just from a call center and basically have no clue what they are talking about and will tell you anything to get you off the phone. You need to ask for a High Dollar representative because they are much more specialized and can actually help you if possible, which in this situation they should.
I ran into this same situation a few years ago on a Darnold NT 9.5 buyer asked for a return almost a month to the day it sold and coincidentally the same day it was announced that he got Mono and would be out over a month stating "found a better price". I got that first rep and was told there was nothing else I needed to do that it was a clear case of remorse and that in 3 days a member of ebay would step in and decide in my favor. Well they didn't step in 3 days later the buyer filed a claim stating "not as described" and Ebay gave him his return and money back. I call and called and tried to fight it but in the end there was nothing I could do but accept the return. then to boot they were going to keep my $300 selling fees on the card because I didn't accept the return and they had to step in. I fought and fought with them for a few weeks before I finally got my selling fees back as a one time "courtesy". I was so pissed after this that I felt the same way as you and have cut back big time on the amount of cards I sell on ebay because they no longer protected the seller in any way. I even started a petition on their new return policy and got over 200 signers and sent it to them. Recently they have stepped up a bit to protect sellers again but not the way they used to. Would like to think my petition helped but who knows. I truly hope they make this right for you. Good Luck!!!

Thank you guys, I'm sorry to hear of your own issues as well. I know many have had issues with ebay from the sell side, and many blowout members have since gone away from this platform for these very issues.
I was quite pissed off when I not only got the return request, which a return in and of itself doesn't bother me so much, but the specific reasoning for the return was what absolutely aggravated me. Like, you really going to try and play me like this? the excuse is so paltry and egregious, by all means if proven trimmed I take it back 100% but I'm willing to bet my house this card is not trimmed but only being returned because value went down. It really feels like being taken advantage of, and obviously no one likes that feeling. Especially when we try to conduct ourselves in good faith. I posted on here seeking help/advice, but it also just helps to share the story and frustration. In spite of our petty bickering at times on here, I do consider this space a fun outlet I get to share with fellow card buddies who I enjoy bantering with (both those I argue with and those I agree with, in the end we're all of the same stripe, card enthusiasts). And I do appreciate the well wishes and kind sentiments regarding my case! To me, I buy a card, I live and die with where it goes once the sales contract has been executed (item paid, received). Sometimes it goes down, sometimes up, but I'm not going to screw sellers over by only accepting upside on a card while shifting any downside back to them. Now, of course this issue is about the money, but there is also a principles aspect and when someone tries to #$%#% you over never take it laying down unless there are tactical reasons you have to roll with the punches quitely (office politics, etc, you know how that can go haha!).

Update: I managed to talk to a High Value Item claims specialist from ebay (thanks sethc1020 for the suggestion). It's a tricky situation, and he was quite honest (and helpful). He drew out the likeliest scenarios. He said that even though I am probably in the right, ebay is a bit cornered on these issues because even if they file for the seller the buyer can always do a runaround to the CC company. The only major way I can win is if they review the buyer's account(s) and find that they have participated in collectible/sports card speculation of a similar nature they can have their accounts suspended and terminated.
So, all things considered, the likeliest is that I will lose this case and have to accept the return. Not all hope is lost but as most pointed out I should expect the worst which was always likeliest endgame. Going forward I will likely be shifting all high value card sales over to IG and explore other avenues.
