Took a look at the grading images and it just says "altered" with no further context of why.

This response from their support team certainly doesn't inspire confidence:

Once the cards have been graded, that is when they move on to our Identification Team. Though these cards don't have the exact information, this would not have affected the grading of the cards themselves. Our Team will encapsulate these cards as authentic, and if they have a secondary designation of minimum size or altered, we will add this. With this submission, the option to encapsulate any altered cards was not selected, this covers any cards that do not meet the minimum requirements for a numeric grade. This is why these cards were not encapsulated and are being sent back as Raw.
So, if I'm understanding correctly, SGC sent my cards back raw because I didn't request that they be encapsulated even if "altered." SGC determined that my cards were "altered," for their purposes, simply because they didn't meet SGC's minimum size guidelines. However, SGC didn't know what sets my cards actually came from (even though I told them), so they used the minimum size guidelines for entirely different sets.

Did you call SGC (or have them call you back) and speak to someone from SGC about this over the phone?

I had an SGC order that had an issue where all 20 cards in the order didn't getting scanned. No photos/images of the cards. Cards were fine, graded quickly, and returned and graded, just no images/scans. It wasn't a major issue, but I emailed them about it at 8pm PST, and had a reply back when I woke up in the morning. They apologized and realized the error and offered to FedEx me a label to send the entire order back at no charge to scan in the images of each card.

I didn't really care, and I have a flatbed scanner and I scanned each card front/back and provided them with a Dropbox link to the images to hopefully host them online for cert lookups, but a few hours later I got and email and a call from SGC. SGC understandably couldn't accept the images since they can only host images they scanned for their workflow and also to prevent fraud. Makes sense completely. And I was really impressed how they sent me multiple emails quickly and even a phone call to address this right away.

Your issue seems fairly complicated, and it seems best explained over the phone (with an email follow-up) and I'm guessing they would fix/address this for you once explained and confirmed over the phone.

When you mentioned that you might have to send them to PSA, I cringed, because not only will PSA be much worse if there's an issue (and there likely will be), but you likely will have to wait 3+ months for "Research & ID" alone, only to then realize PSA messed up your order as well, and getting anything like this resolved with PSA is a nightmare.

I would personally email back SGC and request to speak to someone over the phone about this, and then they will call you back ASAP. At least, they sure did for me. Much like problems with eBay, sometimes a simple phone call can do wonders over lengthy back-and-forth emails.

I hope this works out and please keep us posted. Cheers.

They ended up sending me a return label and offered to slab them as a "one-time courtesy." I'm taking them up on the offer because I want the cards protected, but I asked them to take another look at the cards for possible numeric grades. We'll see what they do. I expect them to double-down on their mistake and just reflexively slab them as "Minimum Size Not Met," but I'll be pleasantly surprised if they don't.

Good to hear that they're going to take another look at it. Again, I hope things work out.

I would personally ask for a call back on the day the cards actually arrive at their location by checking the tracking number. Then just explain things a bit over the phone as it always seems to help, and since they have them on-site at that point, maybe they can flag the box for special instructions, etc.

A call could do wonders in this type of scenario. Just my take and hope things work out.

Has SGC confirmed to you recently that they are still "RE"searching them or do you think they might be searching for them due to losing them? Seems like they've had them for what seems like an unordinary long time.

8 card order.

Current status: "Received"

Order delivered: 8/24/24 (Show drop-off; Saturday)
Marked received:8/25/24 (Sunday)

I am assuming the cards weren't actually delivered to SGC office until 8/26 (Monday). So today will be the 5th business day.

Pros and Cons of submitting via shows. Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż

They've not contacted me once. I do think they forgot about my order but i'll refrain from contacting them just to see how long this will all take.

Why not just send an email? They are very responsive and helpful. I had an order that was delivered during the national and took over a week to get marked as received. I sent an email to check on status and let them know I understand they may be behind because of the National and I was ok with that. I just wanted to know my cards were there. They responded to my email, marked as received, and graded the cards within two days.

Had a small 11 card order that I shipped out on 8/26 or 8/27.

8/30 - Marked Rec'd
9/6 - Into Post Grading

Honestly, my first time using SGC for personal grading. Obviously very happy with the turn around time. I also like is being able to mix eras. I don't always have much vintage but recently came across most of these. Fingers crossed on how these turn out, the Groat and Robinson are "test" cards so to speak, the Mantle is well centered and the '55 Bowman are just super clean.

1 1997-98 Fleer Ultra #96P John Starks Platinum Medallion --
2 2003-04 Fleer E-X #30 Eddie Jones Essential Credentials Now --
3 2000-01 Topps Finest #38 Eddie Jones Gold Refractor 52/100 --
4 1961 Topps #150 Willie Mays --
5 1954 Topps #43 Dick Groat --
6 1954 Topps #32 Duke Snider --
7 1962 Topps #471 Mickey Mantle All-Star --
8 1955 Bowman #33 Nelson Fox --
9 1955 Bowman #60 Enos Slaughter --
10 1955 Bowman #59 Whitey Ford --

Is there any consensus opinion of what an SGC 9 would cross over to in PSA?
Would it be more likely PSA 9 or 8? What type of weigting - 70% 9 and 30% 8 or something else?

This might be a bit long winded so apologies in advanced,There is no easy answer here.first crossovers are not easy to begin with i would discourage it.I have done both from SGC to PSA and PSA to SGC.Both weigh thing differently.on top of that its very hard to see the card through the slab only slam dunks cross.

I did several SGC to PSA cross overs, only 1 of 7 passed,i also did 10 PSA to SGC crossovers for a 87-88 fleer basketball graded set in 8 or above in SGC.Im close to finishing and got impatient waiting for SGC 8 or above to be listed, the only one that crossed was a PSA 9 that ended up an SGC 8.

So i would just recommend cracking and subbing it raw,Ive had good luck snapping SGC cards and getting the same grade from PSA,Ive also had good luck snapping PSA to get the same grade at SGC.One thing you may want to consider is why its a SGC 9,corners,centering,surface,edges?SGC is harder on somethings than PSA and PSA is harder than SGC on somethings.

If centering caused the SGC 9, I could see it getting a PSA-10 in some cases.

If it's due to corners or surface, then PSA-9 or lower 95% of the time.

If it's just the back corners/edges, like on a Chrome card where they can appear imperfect, then it could get a PSA-10.

I cracked an SGC 8.5 with a dimple on the back as the only flaw I could find and it got a PSA-10, so we're definitely not talking 0% chance. You just have to asses the card and use experience to suggest what is likely.

There are so many variables. So while it might be 3-5% that become PSA-10, on an individual card basis, it could be 0% chance to maybe 75% chance. Far more will be 0% than 75%, however.

Thanks! Ford was super clean, hoped maybe it had a shot at a 7 but was the best out of the 55 B's I sent.

Guess tracking was wrong, looking like tomorrow now.

A couple others I figured I'd share:

Small 9 card Topps Chrome $12 special popped today

10 x 3

9.5 x 5

9 x 1

Really pleased with the grades. Same order sent to PSA would have been double the price, taken 2 months longer, and no doubt would have had at least an 8 and a 6 or 7.

Some of my favorites from my most recent vintage order. I sent two modern orders earlier this week, with one of them being the Chrome special.

My latest SGC (6 Card Order):

Received: 09-09-24
Graded: 09-13-24
Shipped Back: 09-17-24

Turnaround times at SGC and just fantastic. 7 business days they had my cards before they are examined, graded, assembled and shipped back.
(In related news, PSA took over three weeks just to enter my cards into the "Research & ID" stage after receiving them.)

Here are a few standouts:

All grades were consistent and what I estimated. These are for my PC and I'm really happy with them.

Nice cards! This is my first time submitting to SGC and wish I could say the same. My cards were delivered on 9-5 and haven’t shown any movement since. Just says “ received “. Hopefully they’ll get graded soon.

I would definitely email them with your order number and ask.
SGC typically emails back immediately, and their customer service is exceptional.
