I think its surprising some people but there's several factors in play...
1. The economy is in the dumps.

2. Awful time to sell high end baseball. It's a bad time in the calendar year when things are hot. It's a really bad time when things are not.

3. Acuna is coming of a less than stellar return from the ACL.

4. The hobby has left BGS completely behind. I saw an IG poll by a bigger account last week. Approx. ~400 votes: "Which TPG are you planning to use moving forward?" BGS had something around 6-8% while PSA & SGC accounted for 85%+ of the entire vote.

It was a really good deal. Went and looked at terapeak and was shocked that only a handful have sold over the last year, all between $2k and $3k. I bid $1687 (I like bidding weird numbers).

Hit all 4 in the head here. I think any price of 2020/2021 can be thrown out the window, some cards won't see those values again. Even absolute studs(ie Brady) have dropped considerably.

Acuna needs a big rebound year to get that collectability back up. Kinda funny how the injury and down year, and now nobody talks about him much.

I expect really big things from our boy in 2023. He started working out and hitting the day after the season ended. He's locked in and not satisfied. He's hungry. He was winning the NL MVP before he got injured in 2021.

Honestly, this was one of my first thoughts when people bash him for not hustling and being lazy. Dude loves to play the game, but at some point he has to be looking around and wondering "what the f.... man"

Free agent at age 31 in 2029? Incentive to put up great numbers for one huge contract then as long as he doesn't do an Andruw Jones. 7 years ago in 2015 highest paid player was Kershaw at $30 mil. Judge will make $40 mil in 2023. 7 years from now...Acuna will be the half billion dollar man...$50 mil/year for the rest of his career. I like that he may feel he has something to prove to people.

I would love to think that he will be motivated to put up huge numbers for 7 years. If the FA market keeps moving at this insane pace, I could see some big resentment building from him in a couple years (if not already). Not that it is the Braves' fault at all - clearly he/his agent were happy with the deal when he made it, but yeah...his contract is TOO team friendly.
