I might have to compete with you under $10K. What did these peak at? $90K?

If there are no BLs right now, just wish upon a shooting star. One may magically surface right before the National or another big event to infuse more juice...

Grading is a necessary scam in the wild west we know as sports cards. But BLs are an unnecessary part of that scam.

The market is interesting right now. Seems ultra high end is crashing and lower end continues to slide, more or less, but the key cards at more approachable price points are coming back to life a bit. #57 in anything under 10 feels like a decent purchase at the moment as we may have hit the bottom. It’s dropped 75% from where it was 18 months ago. It’s mj. It’s obviously an iconic key card. The slow steady blue chip climb has begun.

I picked up a 86 sticker and a 84 star #195 a month ago. They’re among the nicest I’ve seen of each card. The risk/reward finally reached a threshold I am comfortable at. Both are key early mj. Both have gone up a bit this month based on recent hammers.

Those don't even appear to be original scans. Take a look at corners of front image. Appears to be cropped from another source.

at the beginning of the pandemic PSA 9s were $6K and 10s were $40K, a ratio of about 7:1.

There were a couple sales of 10s at $750K at the peak, while 9s peaked at or near $90K.

And the prices on 9s are around $14-15K now, right?

PSA 9s are selling for around $15-16K right now. I think we are at or near the floor and don't see them ever approaching $10k or below. PSA 8s are selling for like $7-8K.

MJ is MJ. Most have him the GOAT of all GOATs. His legend will never die. Still think long term, this card is a great investment at current prices. I learned long time ago never underestimate the levels MJ items can reach.

I remember in this thread when I said no 9s will not reach 200k and people argued.

I thought PSA 9s peaked at $75k? I rememeber a PWCC auction ending at that amount and thinking, "Wow!"

PSA 9 stickers peaked at around $30K.

Of course in hindsight, i wish i sold all my MJs at the peak. Would've been a nice down chunk of change.

This is a fun thread with a lot to learn from. Pages 150, 156, 157 marked the peak of irrational exuberance with some hot takes.

EDIT: He has not posted in a year (since March 2022). I hope he sold at least one of his two PSA 10's near the peak

It’s funny to look back and see how people’s perception of money changes in just two years.

Anybody still buying $500,000 worth of cards on a monthly basis?

Anyone still have a ten million dollar sports cards collection?

Irrational exhuberance is quite the perfect way to frame it.

I still remember very clearly starting to talk myself into the Covid card price spike becoming the “new normal” even while knowing there were many, many obvious signs and underlying factors to counter that

I thought the GOAT of GOATS in team sport was Gretzky given the distance between him and the next player(s) (Orr, Howe, Mario...?), and no real debate going on there.

I could see a bit more softening on the MJ 9s but $10K is probably the hard floor, which might make $100K the hard floor for the 10s unless the ratios go back to near pre-pandemic 7:1.

PSA website price history data show a single or maybe a couple sales above $90K.

Of course only one or two people could have sold at that peak, imagine being that lucky bastard(s).

some of us remember the '98-00 dotcom MJ bubble that burst along with NASDAQ. The price trajectory on a 10 went from around $5K to over $30K in about 12-18 months. Some of us saw the same pattern but even more pronounced this time around. That was a 6-fold increase; the $40K to $750K on the 10s this time was 19-fold (and about 15-fold for the 9s).

I unloaded my 9 about two weeks from the peak, and the price spike was so irrationally exuberant at that point that the price I sold at was barely over half of the lucky bastard's sale price. I was kicking myself for about two weeks there, before realizing in hindsight just how close to the peak time-wise I unloaded (after 10 months of run-up; I figured that the price going from $6K to over $30K - on 9s, not even 10s - looked enough like the dotcom one that anything over $30K was enough gravy indeed not to get greedy).

somewhere in this thread is me saying at the very peak that 87F MJ 9s at $9K was some damn overpriced cardboard. Wasn't it obvious?

Not-so-iconic cardboard for crying out loud.

Was the Bron bubble even worse? It coincided with the Lakers looking like they might pull off a b2b chip, until injuries hit. PSA 10 base Chromes going for $40K? (Overrated card given the photo imo.) Where are they now?

Yes, 86 Fleer in PSA 10. I personally saw about 6 or 7 of them in the $3500 price range. The PSA 9's were about $1500. I believe this was at the show in 2010ish.....

i just want to see that coffee-stained 10 go up for sale and shatter under $10K (i.e. price for an 8) like it deserves to. Some dipwad hasn't taken PSA up on its grading guarantee, why? Just so they can own a slab with a 10 on it?

I don't see them ever getting that low again. Maybe the $75k range is the floor. I think there is to much manipulation still going on to see them get under that.
