At the most basic level, the idea of someone who has already served their prison time being unable to vote on account of unpaid fees is way too similar to a poll tax.

It's really hard to support that if one takes an open democracy approach.

[Someone who still favors the "apply slight restrictions so that only competent citizens who are invested in the country will be inclined to vote" approach likely won't have a problem with it. No judgement here. There are strong arguments from classical republicanism for this position.]

But the selectivity of Bloomberg's donation should raise all of our eyebrows. It's way too similar to the "political machines" and "city bosses" of the Gilded Age/Progressive Era where the poor exchanged votes for needed resources.

Sometimes a good act, under certain circumstances can become an evil one. Giving food to the poor is a good act. Giving food only to poor whites and leaving others hungry is an evil one. Paying the fees of only swing state and swing county formerly incarcerated voters is...........well, I have serious reservations about it.
