Those comebacks don't even make any sense...
But let's not make this thread about Acuna vs. Ohtani.

I love to watch both players, and hope Acuna comes back strong from injury as well.
And looking forward to Ohtani's ASG appearance tomorrow.

No excuse but it seemed like Soto had a better/more consistent pitcher.

I am not sure. It used to be the most civil thread on Blowout.

the acuna thread has some weird celebratory comments when he got injured, but can you imagine the amount people pining for an Ohtani injury? not sure why, but i'm guessing it's the bitcoin type returns they missed out on?

it doesn’t matter if you lose a HR derby when you are not taking batting practice and treating MLB games like they ARE home run derby’s…i really doubt you will see Peters cards explode because he won 2 of them. Ask a Mets fan, they are probably saying whoop T doooo, now win some regular season games and get into the playoffs.

If O.T. hits 2 hrs in the all star game and throws 2-3 shut out innings it only justifies the prices/hype, if he continues his regular season dominance then he might be able to hold relatively solid prices through winter, maybe.

I could be wrong. I’m not really sure what the discussion is in here but that’s all that can happen so.

It was great to see Shohei smile and enjoy himself. On the flipside Alonso looked like the kid who took everything seriously when everyone else was trying to just have fun

Just goes to show how important pitch placement is. The guys who did the best had the balls pitched accurately.

Whoever that dude throwing to Alonso was insanely accurate.

As for Ohtani, at least he must have had the most HRs hit from out of the strike zone.

P.S. those #44 Ohtani jerseys are really cool.

Or Alonso was simply better. How many times did Ohtani take that same, middle-height, slightly in pitch and hit a line drive? It must've been 5 times in a row that he did the same thing with a perfectly fine pitch. A lack of adjustment is not the pitcher's fault.

Pretty sure Alonso's guy even hit him once, too.

Way too much is being put on the pitchers as excuses.

I thought this was great! Win or lose, very exciting and all eyes were on Showtime and he delivered IMO! Started rusty but quickly showed his talent!

I will say, I'm not a fan of the format of the HR Derby. Bring back the ol' 10 outs format. Hit as many bombs with outs. It seems like the fans clinged to every home run in those formats and each bomb was savored. This is just a race to rack up points with no time to cherish one hit from another.

Even though he wasn't able to take it home, the guy is a blast to watch. He definitely seems to have pure joy when playing which makes him even more fun to watch imo.

Alonso comes across as an arrogant prick who at the company picnic would gladly take the last beer from the ice chest without batting an eye and also make a move on your girlfriend

Ohtani came across as a guy who loves the game, loves the fans and is completely likeable

The future is bright for the Sho-Gun Warrior

My mom became a fan after the HR Derby. She liked that he wasn't like most athletes and looked like he was having fun and self-deprecating. She had heard my dad and I discuss him but had no other real data points for Ohtani. I think that's a net positive for Ohtani. Tomorrow will be much of the same.

It's not like there's a ton of high-end collectors who are going to be swayed by a great/awful AS showing. He's in the middle of a historic season and the closer he gets to "Short list of Greatest Seasons in MLB history" the more interest in his cards.

But regardless of performance tomorrow, this entire MLB AS break has been a barrage of Ohtani takes and angles, nearly all of them effusive in praise. That makes a mark on the most casual collectors.

Alonso did just make $1 million by winning, and he only makes $600k in salary this year so there was a valid reason for his intensity!

I think this is really the key takeaway from the all star festivities…there are just going to be a ton of eyes and attention on the guy. And as long as he doesn’t injure himself or do something that completely turns off fans to him, it’s all going to be portrayed in a positive light, with positive attention and positive news takes on/for Ohtani. Won’t matter to the card world if he allows three homers or strikes out three times tomorrow.

All he needs to do to cement a truly great place in baseball annals is to continue his first half performance for the second half of the year, pitching and hitting. And then as a cherry on top, do it for a couple years (1-3?) after that. No big deal. Other than the fact that it hasn’t happened in a century.

Oh, Alonso was better. Never said he wasn't.

I was merely making an observation.

Perhaps using the same designated pitcher for all batters would even things up more?

Also, I really dislike the head to head elimination matchups as well. Maybe the top 4 in HRs move on to the next round of something? at least for the first round...

Hitters pick the pitchers they like. They remarked on the broadcast that his pitcher had a slight cut on his ball. If Ohtani didn't like how he pitched BP, he wouldn't have been there to throw to Ohtani. Every guy has a preference. Alonso's guy lobbed it with an arc. I'm sure there are plenty of guys that don't like that. Soto went lefty on lefty. Everybody has the choice to choose their favorite BP arm.
