I keep wondering how much better his numbers would be if this lineup was actually all healthy. Upton, ohtani, trout, rendon, Walsh, stassi, etc. Hes been on this homer binge with close to nothing around him.

Angels bullpen catcher Jason Brown will be Ohtani's pitcher for home run derby.

So I haven't been following Ohtani's prices, mainly because I sold a Chrome Update International Affairs auto a year too soon(but oh well, made good money on it).

But are his Chrome Updates rookie debuts really the more popular card than the base rookies?

I think at the moment most of his batting stance RC cards are more desired for non-auto RC cards. Most still feel his #700 flagship will be the long-term winner and his Bowman chrome will distance itself from others, but the fact PSA 10 of the Rookie Debut has climbed over $500 per is a sign that people like his batting card, even if it is not the rookie from the update chrome set. Just imagine if the images were reversed and the HMT1 was batting.

Wouldn't the Chrome version (#150) of the #700 flagship generally still be considered the "flagship" but worth more because of chrome aspect?

The set vs photo debate has been a hot topic in the Tatis thread, Vlad thread, and it’s definitely emerging here as Ohtani’s market is going supernova.

Love it or hate it, there seems to be a clear hobby preference for vertical, batting photos. This is why the Tatis RD gained so much traction because it’s everything the 410 wasn’t. With that being said, the set still matters, a lot. I would encourage people to think of the photo and set in combination rather than falling into the binary position of all or nothing.

There will be RD’s that will be valuable due to the photo like Ohtani and Tatis. This won’t negate the value of their regular Flagship and TC counterparts, but it will likely take a bit of the premium from them because some money will be spent on the RD’s which would have otherwise been spent on the traditional RC. I would personally buy both in the case of Ohtani and Tatis.

With Vlad, he has a fantastic vertical batting image for the NNO and the TC which makes them the top of the food chain without question. You have set and photo without any trade off. Vlad’s RD is certainly nothing to write home about, but he also has a true RC in Update and TCU. Aside from the paper parallels and numbered color, the sneaky good buys IMO on these are the refractors and Xfractors because of the serial numbered scarcity. Many casual buyers will ignore this fact, but in the long run these will appreciate very well.

With Ohtani, I would buy high grade Flagship, and focus on RD paper parallels and refractors, but prices are starting to get silly so buy now if you have faith in him long term.

Something that has really got me thinking is that aside from Ohtani’s unicorn quality, if he shatters the REAL HR record without steroids, the hobby pressure isn’t as immense for him vs the other youngsters to have a long productive career. Of course I would love to see both, but this would be an interesting scenario if he stayed hot and pulled off the unthinkable this early in his career.

Agree. I actually like that one and very likely to be the chrome version people move toward. The TC 150 is not talked about much. There is a lot of interest also in the Bowman best and finest batting versions.

When comparing psa10 prices keep in mind not as many rd have been submitted. I expect that to change. They're selling for 500 because of low pop, but if you compare to acuna and soto there should be thousands eventually I would think.

Fantastic cards to own and tough gems I jumped on the train too late, but I really wanted a high grade RD refractor. Now my wallet says nope.

Bowman’s Best and Finest are GREAT options for people like myself that don’t have deep pockets. Attractive cards with awesome batting images.

Absolutely true. I have 8 that will be graded, but am thinking different. I am looking at the closing prices, the grading cost combination. SGC could be a play, especially if prices trend up for those over the next month or so. $500 close with about $250 in fees and services including grading vs $225-ish with $75-ish in fees including grading puts ROI much closer.

I also like his team set RC...same image as Finest...and really cheap, although not if you want a 10.

Condition sensitive because of it being the last card in the set. Corners can be rough. I picked up a lot of the Topps black label 1 versions because of batting image about 1 month ago.

I purchased 10 team sets when they first released. Had absolutely zero issues with my team set rookies. Corners and overall condition should yield a few 10's. Just gotta wait it out.... Cards will be sent to PSA when things return to normal. Fortunately I still have 5 sealed sets leftover

Anybody know the pr on the team sets? Could be another card whose graded pop increases a lot.
