The highest known sale for a 98 PMG Larkin is $3300. The $2700 BIN was the highest known sale of a 98 Now. The highest known sale of a Crusade Red is $5111.

Look, I'm not saying I know any other player's market, but I know Larkin's. And the Crusade is the more valuable card.

And while basketball has definitely driven up a lot of the baseball market, Crusade and Mirror Gold have a special place in baseball collectors' hearts that the PMGs and Essential Credentials don't. Yes, those sets got a major boost, from really not all that desired, to top tier cards, because of basketball. The Crusade and Mirror Gold are still king of baseball. And most certainly in Larkin's case. The 98 Now /25 just doesn't rise above the Crusade /25, or even the Mirror Gold /30.

You can speculate about an auction on the 98 Now all you want, but it's a sale, and a best offer at that. If it's a $5000 card, no one is risking losing it at $3500 by making an offer $800 cheaper. That gives you a real indication of the market. What we do know is there were two people willing to pay $5100 for the Crusade, and know of no one for sure who would even pay $3500 for the 98 Now.

Awesome discussion here on the Larkin cards!
I'm a lifelong fan of the Reds & Larkin and happy he is getting his due as far as card prices/popularity goes.

Post with pics incoming of a couple I have.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not actively looking to sell these.

They've been in a binder since the late 90s and I've finally gotten around to pulling a few of them out and putting them in toploaders for better protection.

This is the only Larkin Crusade that I have.

Obviously not as rare or desirable as the Red version.

Yeah every player could be different depending on a couple factors but the player collectors of that certain player know which ones are more wanted.

The card that someone paid $5,000+ for is worth more than the card that someone paid $2700 for until someone pays more than $5,000 for the card that was sold for $2700. Clear.

That's a beauty!

Does grading matter much on cards like these?
Or are they so rare, it's not that big of a deal?

Unless you have a PSA 10 there is not much difference between raw and graded. Beautiful EC Now, that's a big one for sure!!

Awesome Griffey and its still got the string! Not a graded guy, but does PSA take that into account when grading? I guess its kind of like peeling a card so probably not, but a complete card imo, beauty!

I agree with caster. Unless it's a 10, they all tend to sell about the same. These cards are not only rare, but extremely condition sensitive. The only reason any of mine are graded is because they were that way when they popped up for sale and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to buy it. Otherwise, I don't personally seek out any graded copies of rare 90s cards, even 10s. That said, there are definitely some who do prefer 10s, so they carry a premium.

Crusades and Mirror golds are significant but all the top sales for star players come from the EC Now set. The Lofton collector said in the last page that he considers the Lofton Ec Now higher than the Crusade red. So it has real significance in the baseball community as well. Another example is that most Griffey collectors consider the EC Now the top card for Griffey, miles ahead of the crusade red and Mirror gold.

The guy who took the best offer for the Larkin EC Now was too quick. He would of been able to sell it for more. No 98 pmg outsells a EC Now if that player is numbered to under 30. You said that, even though you look several times a day and have saved searches, you didn't even see it.

I don't know all the Larkin collectors, but know that some low numbered EC collectors would bid strong for that one.

I never said it had no significance. In fact, I have said multiple times it is a top 5 card for Larkin. You just made comments that FOR LARKIN it would easily outsell the Red Crusade. That is just wrong. It makes no sense to compare other players whose EX Now is out of a much smaller number. And you say "all the top sales" for star players comes from EX Now. Ironically, for Larkin it isn't close. There are 4 cards that have sold higher than EX Now.

Edit to add: Although no real statistical significance, blowout's poll had the mirror gold, red crusade, and 98 Essential Credentials, all tied for top 90s set. So we're all right.

I just found a 1997 Collector's Choice Crash the Game "Instant Win" Mike Piazza in the lot that also had the Ken Griffey Jr. Not sure how I missed it last time but I'll post a pic here shortly.

Yep! 1:216. Now to add a few other players and some Hologrfx (1:1500) too. Maybe I'll find some at the National.

Nice pickup! I’m always on the lookout for late 90’s Griffey inserts. Griffey has a ton of collectors, but some good cards slip through the cracks simply because some have no idea how rare certain insert sets are. There’s a lot more to know than just simply gold /50 blue /150 etc. I sure miss the days when multiple companies were in the mix and things were more creative.

I always thought these inserts looked nice and for many players aren’t terribly expensive. The 1/1 is the back doored card missing the serial number.
