Johnny Mize is the only player in MLB history to hit 50 HRs in a season but strike out fewer than 50 times in that same season.

The 1969 Mets are the only team to go from 100 losses in one season to 100 wins within 3 seasons.

In just 57 games, Barry Bonds is the fastest player in history to hit 10 HRs and steal 15 bases after his debut. Yesterday, Elly De La Cruz became the 2nd fastest doing it in his first 58 games. (Since at least 1900)

1987 cards are older today, than the 1952 Mantle was in 1987.

If I have to feel old, with a recent birthday, so do you.

Yep. We are further away from the 1986 Donruss Canseco Rated Rookie and the 1985 Topps Dwight Gooden than those cards are from the 1952 Topps Mantle. Crazy.

Today is Yu Darvish's birthday! So, here's a trivia tidbit about him. In his last start, Yu struck out 6 Orioles giving him 1,919 career strikeouts. He surpassed Hideo Nomo's career strikeout record (1,918) for a Japanese born player.

LOL, we were just having this conversation at work about TV shows.

I remember when I was 10-11 years old, and in the summer a local station would show reruns of Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. I liked watching those shows, and it always felt like it could have been 100 years ago, even though it's what my dad watched when he was a kid.

To put it in today's perspective, it's like a 10 year old watching Friends.

Eddie Murray is the All-Time leader in Sac Flies despite never leading the league.

There were 38 pitcher seasons of at least 10 starts and a sub 1.50 era in the major leagues through 1919. Over the next hundred years (1920-2020) there were two, both in St. Louis:

1944 Red Munger (11-3, 1.34 in 121 innings over 21 games, 12 starts for the AL champ Browns)
1968 Bob Gibson

In 2021 there were two more:

Jacob DeGrom 7-2, 1.08 in 15 starts, 92 innings
Ranger Suarez 8-5, 1.36 in 12 starts and 39 total games, 106 innings

Ranger Suarez?

There are also five relievers who pitched at least 100 innings with a sub-1.50 era since 1920:

Ted Abernathy 1967
John Hiller 1973
Bruce Sutter 1977
Jesse Orosco 1983
Mel Rojas 1992

There are two NeL players who fit the criteria; Slim Jones pitched 203 innings and went 20-4, 1.29 in 1934 and Satchel Paige was 6-4 in 16 starts in 1944, posting a 1.10 era.

This one isn't quite as fun, but Prince & Cecil Fielder each had exactly 319 home runs.

They both hit 92 home runs with 2 outs, and both hit 18 home runs in the 9th inning.

Ken Griffey Jr and Ken Griffey Sr hit back to back homeruns off the Angels' Kirk McKaskill on September 14, 1990.

They also share the same first name.

At the end of the 1941 season, Ted Williams faced a choice.

Apparently, he had .400 (due to rounding) locked up on Saturday evening, with a double-header on Sunday (the final day). Here were his options: sit out and protect the .400 achievement, or play and risk losing it.

As we all know, he chose to play, telling the Sporting News: "I want to have more than my toenails on the line."

Ted went 4-5 in the first game and then 2-4 in the second. What a legend.

By the book, it is possible to throw a perfect game with your team making an error.

This may be buried earlier in the thread:

A HOF pitcher struck out players A and B during his career. Player A’s rookie year was 1939, and player B’s final year was 2007.

Who are they?

I’ve seen this before so I won’t answer either. But I’ll throw this one out there…

Satchel Paige faced Smokey Joe Williams who debuted in 1905 with the San Antonio Black Bronchos and he faced Carl Yastrzemski who retired in 1983.
