I don't generally keep up with card values too much. I am floored at the prices his low end rookies are going for considering the number of them out there. Is his base holiday rookie card really a $60 card?

The rising floor is a result of fans being priced out of the more traditional low-end stuff. They have to buy something Ohtani.

I bought these two (/399 and /50) from a seller in China awhile back (I think for like $80 for the pair). I know nothing about how they were distributed/sold. But both cards really shine in hand.

I also think there's a shift that's happened in prospecting. Prospecting has always existed. Van Poppel is pretty much a meme at his point. Hideo Nomo was similar. But the prospecting that's gone on in the "new era" of collecting since 2018 has been on steroids. How many people can be burned before they just decide to put their money into a potential GOAT instead of a random 1st bowman?

Even above average players like Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carrol, Vladdy Jr, etc have seen almost no rise in value in their 1st Bowmans/RCs since they'e come out. So why prospect any more? If those guys can't increase in value then there's 2,000 others players that have literally crashed out or declined. Prospecting feels like it's getting a huge pull back. James Wood had a spectacular rookie season last season. Had he had a season like that in 2022 I think his cards would have shot up. They really haven't. They've gone up a little, but not a lot. I think that's because Ohtani is devouring the market.

I think people look at Jordan and Brady and see how their cards have just climbed. So they're shifting their money into Ohtani who is at least on a similar trajectory. So instead of buying a $60 James Wood, they're buying a $60 1st or 2nd year Ohtani.

Sorry for the long read. One other point. Ohtani has been the first "marketable" superstar in any sport in a long time. He's in a HUGE market close to Japan. He's in Fortnite where only a few athletes have been in. He's in commercials. He's been in the World Series two years in a row. And he's not white. So he sticks out a little more to Americans - his face is just more recognizable. The amount of exposure he's gotten since leaving the Angels is next level.

That's kind of an interesting idea about prospecting, but why now? We're like two years out now from maybe the biggest prospect implosion ever with Wander Franco. I don't really follow prospects at all though, it would be interesting to hear from some prospect people if they're seeing less interest lately.

I really believe in Roman Anthony and have been tempted to flip one of my Ohtani's for a big Anthony card....but I don't want to take a chance on an uncertainty (no matter how much I believe Anthony is the next big thing) when Ohtani offers the most stability and growth chances the hobby has perhaps ever seen.

That ties into my point about the decline of prospecting. Prospecting used to be fun because you could do it semi-cheaply. Now a case of Bowman is the same price as the out of pocket when giving birth to an actual human. I’m not even being funny.

Just was browsing on 130point as I do most days. I am very impressed with the Ohtani raw RC market lately. I saw this card sold for $571.77 raw and a PSA10 sold for $1276. I assume these have to be all time highs.
