Again, I think Ohtani's market is going to zig while others are zagging.

Talking about Flagship and TC base, I think people are going to be surprised by two things: 1. the value the cards are able to maintain, and 2. the relatively fixed supply that exists out there to sub from.

The cards are both in sets that simply don't get ripped anymore due to replacement cost or just plain old dollar/cost -- 2018 Topps Series 2, which has already exploded due to Bat Down, and 2018 Topps Chrome, which is at like $1,000/box for what amounts to be a 40% chance at hitting an Ohtani base. People sitting on stashes of these unopened products are just going to continue to sit on them and watch them appreciate.

So what's out there? It's all "digging through the box" material which isn't historically conducive to gem mint conditions. I had some in penny sleeves and some raw.

Even in the preseason when everyone was bumping into each other's Soto boner and ripping whatever they could find (including a LOT of '18 Panini) I didn't even sleeve my Ohtani pulls. I think we'll see a TON of PSA 9s hit the market but not as many 10s as people think.

I also think he'll have a higher demand than either Acuna/Soto/Tatis have experienced (aided in no small part by the wider, global audience) and the upper middle-class base cards will hold their value.

Would I much rather have a parallel, serial-numbered, or auto card? Hell yeah. But I don't think the sun is going to set on the nicer Ohtani base in PSA 10 condition.

I agree with this post 100%. I still do think that selling about 10-20% of my base gem stash right now is the wise thing to do, but I am not selling a lot.

Man 18 Topps chrome has taken off, almost $300 for a blaster lol. Never thought we’d see that. Thinking about how I returned 10 monster boxes to Walmart because I didn’t see them holding their value lol. But the only 1 I opened I pulled an xfractor of Ohtani and Devers.

Carrying bag SSP 10 sold at $3k. Haven’t checked worthpoint to see if it was BIN or BO from asking.

Crazy I graded and sold one of these at launch for like $150 give it take lol

What that DOES mean is that collectors will have to pay a lot in order to get an Ohtani PSA slab today, or wait a while to get an Ohtani in a PSA slab at reasonable prices tomorrow (talking mainly bass)
Thankfully I got a few submitted near the end of 2019 and received in August 2020. I had zero idea his stuff would blow up, it was mostly non base stuff I pulled... even a blind nut finds a squirrel once in a while

Bowman carrying bag is not a SSP it's an SP with about 2,000 PR. I'd be suspect of these random pop sales..

With prices skyrocketing on even his Panini Pajama rookie cards, I did some more digging around.

Found all of these sleeved but not top loaded in a team bag. 2018 Donruss Wrapper Redemption Short-Print Rookies FTW

Back when the 2018 Opening Day cards came out at Meijer I drove all over chasing the Ohtani Purple card. I think I opened around 130 blisters and came away with one Ohtani. I wonder if they'll ever get back to their peak price (I remember one selling for around $200 raw).

Now if they do, as a set collector, it'll be hard to convince myself to sell mine as I still have dreams of finishing the set. Even though I've never managed to trade for a single one of my missing needs on that set...

SP is correct. I'm not surprised with this sale at all given the pop.

Judge BC SP in 2017 popped off well during his craze. These cards have legs given the low PR

Thanks... a whole lot of luck involved! I like how humble he is, he was batting well, and TJ surgery many times pitchers elbows are actually stronger... so no big deal if he didn't improve. I might sell one or two of my SP type stuff, the money is so damn tempting.

He just chooses to surround himself with basketball-centric people, and live in a basketball-centric bubble, which is fine, I just can’t stand hearing him talk about baseball like he knows what’s up.

That being said, baseball isn’t exactly where it was in the 80’s in terms of popularity. Ohtani’s season should be a bigger story on the news, but I feel like the networks only want to hype what will drive ratings for events they broadcast.
Well I like Bill Simmons am a Red Sox fan that has lived in LA for a little longer than he has and I'm about 5 years younger. Baseball was my life growing up in MA and as recently as 15 years ago I still watched all 162+ Red Sox games every year. 10 years ago I started cutting back on regular season, 5 years ago I was just watching post season and last year was the first year I watched 0 games and haven't watched anything other than highlights this year. I am not saying two people's experience defines baseball fans but it does seem parallel to what I see as a whole. I don't think many people under 30 know who Ohtani is or Tatis and I guarantee most don't know who Acuna or Vlad Jr are. I just don't see much MLB in the mainstream media or news including sports focused news. Everything is NBA and NFL year round and I see more UFC and international soccer coverage than MLB now. MLB seems fringe like NHL now.

If Ohtani was doing this in late 90s/early 00s he'd be all over the media and news every day. Granted the media is much more splintered now and algorithms mean people only see things that personally interest them too. But I live in Southern CA and I'd guess 90% of the people I know have no idea who Ohtani is

That last statement says it all. I can say in Texas he is not a lead story.

I think once we hit the AS break and all the attention the HRD and the game itself can attract I believe a lot more eyeballs will be watching to see what he does the rest of the season. Can you imagine IF he was to win 10 games as a pitcher and hit 50 HR's!?!?

If he does that it will get crazy and the prices we see now will look like steals. I hope he does them both. The 50 hr’s might be easier compared to the 10 wins. The Angels struggle scoring runs.

I believe you mean the Angels struggle from keeping other teams
from scoring. Offense hasn’t been their problem this year. Once again
it is their pitching. They have the 28th rated pitching staff in the league.
Once Trout comes back they will have one of the most potent offenses in
MLB.

Yes. Besides Ohtani it is thin. We just need to hope when he pitches the offense is on fire. They bailed him out that one bad outing. He had
Game. He has bailed them out of many.

I would like to see
52 and 10. If he goes on a streak and has 40 by the end of the month the 62 counter will go up

NBA finals could potentially run until July 22 if there are 7 games. NFL training camp starts July 27. MLB will have between 5 and 12 days as the only game in town for U.S. sports fans. And talk radio, sports tv, podcasts etc will still be talking NBA and NFL during that period

Have to imagine someone is leaving a lot of money on the table by not breaking this lot up and selling them separately. Pretty great timing though

WTH was MLB thinking pairing Ohtani vs Soto Rd 1 of the derby?? Why wouldn’t you put him in the other bracket to possibly set up a Shohei/Soto battle for the final? I was planning on watching but easy pass on this. To think Ohtani potentially could face Gallo or Story sucks. Horrible marketing job here.
