He is on his way to a singular season. A season that has not only never been performed before, no one has ever even come remotely close to sniffing it.

Now think about it another way. Everyone is hoping he finishes this season but what if he just continues to be this baseball player for the next 10, 12, more(?) seasons? What if this is Shohei Ohtani and he dodges all major injuries in the future? We're talking about probably the best baseball player that has ever lived. And that's not hyperbole.

I don't think you can look at the Acuna/Soto/Tatis markets and deduce anything about Ohtani from them. Ohtani is so good he's on another level.

Arthur
Crazy to think that his upside seriously is the greatest baseball player of all time. Can't really make that case with Acuna/Soto/Tatis/Vlad or even Trout given his injury history the past few seasons.

Lots of possible outcomes for Ohtani but ceiling being GOAT by a wide margin over #2 best player of all time is exciting.

what are people's thoughts on the raw bc 1 (batting) for low 200's, is it good price still? i was pretty shocked to see it almost double last week since when does a bowman outsell the flagship.. also not sure if i buy the hitting image hype didnt really shake out for people who advocated against the tatis 410 due to its image, not sure if im missing something

1st Bowman Chrome bass has always outsold a flagship to my knowledge.

Print run lower, hobby only (I think), batting stance. Pretty difficult to find another bass card that I would want over BC #1

right.. i wasn't thinking about first yr bowman chromes.. also guessing that bc having the rc logo helps it even more compared to other 1st yr chromes

The Bowman chrome #1 seems to be the "it" card for the time being in this market. The pricing of the card does not seem to fit the same pattern compared to Acuna, Soto, Tatis, Guerrero Jr. etc. The hypothesis is that the market likes the batting cards better. But in terms of production it doesn't make any sense to me. On the other hand another batting card the 2018 Topps - Silver Pack 1983 Topps Design Chrome #14 is a strange case study to me as it sells for well below in relative terms compared to Acuna, Soto, Tatis, Guerrero Jr. etc. Read somewhere the approximate print run is like 6k. Maybe this is one of those phenomenons that eventually gets ironed out (like 2018 Topps chrome Acuna prices).

Bowman chrome batting pricing is terribly saturated and far from the best deal. It's not even the first Bowman or the first Bowman chrome. The $1k+ for a psa 10 is just a stupendously bad value.

The pitching version is the 1st Bowman and there is a chrome auto version of that pitching version. So basically, what you're buying in the batting card is a second Bowman card of Ohtani.

If people want to bet on the batting being a new trend, they're welcome to, but I tend to rely more on player comps, data (print run), and history.

That is a rabbit hole that I cannot go down yet....I want to. I am standing eagerly on the edge, but I can't jump, not yet. It's too new.

I think that Shohei will open doors to more players who will want to do this and can do this. Now, I am NOT saying that they can hit 50 bombs and have an OPS of 1.000 and be the fastest guy on the team, but I think the game will evolve because of him.

I'm not saying the card is the best value. I was lucky to buy 6 of these last week at $105 each and the card doubled (mainly because of the potential for grading...these windows in price discrepancy between raw/raw gem rate/10 price don't stay open for a long time).

But, the card itself follows the mantra that all Bowman / Bowman Chrome cards use to follow in that Bowman pitching is a bowman paper card, released in the spring Bowman release (which use to be non chrome). The Bowman Chrome hitting is the Chrome card released in the fall which has historically always been THE card. Look at any player from 1997 Bowman/Bowman Chrome until when Bowman phased out Bowman paper and introduced Chrome cards in the spring release (a huge historical mistake IMO, but side point). Every player's chrome outperformed the paper when the player had both. The autographs do NOT matter. That's a separate discussion. There is no bass card that will surpass the first Bowman Chrome MLB uniform card unless I'm just missing something obvious. And it certainly won't be a Topps paper card.

I use to subscribe to the 1st Bowman Chrome rules them all mantra. 2010 Bowman Chrome USA Bryce Harper, 2010 Bowman Chrome USA Manny Machado, 2009 Bowman Chrome WBC Arolid Chapman, 2012 Bowman Chrome USA Corey Seager all were outperformed by their MLB first Chrome card. There is a place for the mega box 2017 Shohei, but it won't be as collected in mass than the first Bowman Chrome card. It just is what it is.

Let's all calm down and just let him play. Being a two-player isn't easy and if you're collecting with the expectation that he's the GOAT, you leave nothing but room to be disappointed. That kind of talk breeds all types of trolls, so it's cool to be optimistic, but have a drink of water first.

Kid is unreal and now owns another record of most HR’s by a Japanese born player. #ToppsNow

What’s the record to TN in a season?
