Thanks. Looks like an 8 to me. Should the seller disclose? Yes. But at the same time, a NM-MT description is what that falls under. The problem with that listing is the seller didn’t describe the condition at all. Which I guess eBay is now deciding to reach out to the buyer to see what they want to do. A net win for buyers, a loss for sellers, and a lot of extra work for eBay that leads to fewer sales.

It also likely leads to fewer disputes. If this isn't disclosed and I paid enough for authentication, I would do everything I could to get a refund of some sorts.

I have a hard time believing it gets an 8, but que sera, sera.

Seems like a win for the sellers too to me, since it will hopefully train them to do a better job of accurately photographing and describing their items, and how is getting better at your job not a win?

4/22 Auction ended ~3pm, I paid at that time.
4/27, notification from ebay that the card was shipped to the authenticator.
5/3, notification from ebay that it was authenticated, and would ship to me.
5/3 tracking shows label was generated in the morning, it went out ~5pm, acceptance scan ~9pm 5/3
5/5 delivered to me.

Added 4-6 days. Not a huge deal. The extra handling of the card is less than ideal. This isn't the worst thing ever. But it should be optional. If it's eventually an extra cost for sellers, and it prevents returns on raw cards, it would be worth it for the right price. Mainly for expensive cards with flaws that are more likely to be returned.
Thank you for providing the timeline! That’s exactly what I was looking for in this thread. eBay’s “estimate” on the auction page showed an entire month + a few days before I would receive the card. I assumed that was BS, so it’s nice to know it should be normal shipping time + a week or so.

In what world does a serious surface issue like that get an 8?

According to PSA, the first mention a scratch is acceptable is a 6, where " a very slight scratch may be visible upon close inspection". Otherwise, surface issues on grades higher than 6 must be very minor and barely noticeable, but not actual scratches. This is way worse than "very slight" and the location front and center on the player makes it worse. This could very well be a 5, maybe less. They call it an indentation, but it's obvious the gloss is missing there from whatever caused the indentation. I'd consider it a scratch, or a serious surface defect at best.

I like the holders

But this whole thing has been a shiz show

If a raw card is up for sale for 300. But I make offer of 200

It still went to Florida

I had a Psa card go to Florida well under 500 or 750

I had a card that should of went but was wrong In the details so it did not go

I know I have had 3 wrong that went

But like I said if you have a thin card the case is nice display

Lastly. Why not do sealed wax. That would make most sense imo

Done complaining and rambling. Can I buy some of the holders ? . Nice display

Now I'm waiting on a graded card, first one I've bought to go through the loop.

June 23rd, agreed on an offer, paid immediately.
June 23rd, tracking number provided
June 23rd, PRE-SHIPMENT INFO SENT USPS AWAITS ITEM

...although this time, I see a tracking number which I assume is taking it to PSA. On the raw card purchase, I only saw the tracking number when it was coming from CSG to me.

This one's not even mailed yet, so this might be a bad example.

The ebay pizza tracker has:
  • Tracking provided
  • In transit to authenticator
  • Out for delivery
  • Estimated delivery Wed, Jul 13

So estimates 3 weeks total from day of purchase to card in hand of buyer.

There’s no world in which that is a 5-6. It’s a medium sized indentation that you have to angle the card to see. I’ve subbed enough to know what that gets. I know what PSA says their standards are, but they’re applying that to old non-gloss paper stock issues. Chromium cards with small surface marks or one scratch get 9s, multiple scratches get 8s, a small surface impression gets a 9, a larger surface impression gets an 8, a heavy roller mark on the back is a 7, a heavy roller mark on the front can be much lower.

I’d love to buy it when it hits eBay again so I can sub it and see what it gets. Aren’t there supposedly only a couple of these cards in existence? I doubt a hardcore Topps set collector is going to care even if that card gets a 1.

I don't doubt that the grade matters less for such a rare card. But I absolutely disagree that gets anywhere near an 8. This isn't a chrome card. The surface of chrome is very different from that of a paper card. Scratches like this are judged way more harshly than light scratches on a chrome card that are often seen as "normal" for the process of manufacturing to pack. This is nothing like that. It's a scratch, a wide one at that, right in the middle of the front of the card. Any grading company that calls that a "near mint" card has no business grading cards. It's nowhere near mint, not even in the same zip code as mint.

The guy holding the card in his hand called in an indentation. It’s not a scratch. It has that appearance because the surface is glossed and it’s being held at an angle. I brought up Chrome only as a point of comparison.

If it hits eBay again, I will buy it as long as the price is fair. Then I’ll show you my PSA 8.

I can't wait for the update. Send it to Beckett if you really believe it's an 8. Since unlike PSA, they put a ceiling on their grades .5 above the lowest sub grade. But either way, I'll predict a 6 or 7 at best.

EDIT: Keep in mind, the guy holding the card in hand also rejected it as not as described, when the standard for a raw card is an 8. If the card was an 8, it would not need any defects disclosed. He obviously didn't think it was an 8 either.

They rejected it for condition because the listing had no description of condition, and the damage wasn’t present in the photos. There is no standard for raw cards that eBay is applying. Early on, BO themselves had a heavily played Magic card rejected even though it was described and pictured as heavily played.

I’ll send to PSA and enjoy my 8. I don’t use BGS anymore. I do like that earlier it was a 5 or worse, and now it’s a 6 or 7. Guess you’re feeling a little less confident.

LOL I specifically listed the description of a 6. I personally would give the surface less than a 6, but that doesn't mean I believe the grading companies would, especially PSA who tend to overlook one aspect of the grade if the others are fine. I predict they would consider the surface a 6 but would possibly bump the overall grade to a 7 if everything else is gem. I'm confident in the grade of the card. I'm less confident that PSA is ever consistent. If you grade with them as much as you claim, you know that. I've literally cracked cards out of PSA cases and sent them in and got a 2 grade difference.

Enjoy your 6. I look forward to your PSA reveal thread.

Already laying out the excuses for why it grades higher than you think it should. Nice.

If that's what you took from my post, you can't read. It's not an 8. Period.

The only question now is if you’ll be on a new burner by time I get the card back.

More ignorance. It must be terrible for you to jump to conclusions so often and seemingly always be wrong. It's downright embarrassing.

So I have a card on my Ebay for $299.99 BIN. Ebay automatically placed the "Authenticity Guarantee" marker on my listing when I created it.

I just got a message earlier today from a prospective buyer who made me an offer of $220+ shipping which would be $225. I am tempted to accept it, but would I still have to send it to EBay for authentication?

The prospective buyer says he believes with shipping and tax he will just barely avoid having to go through the authenticity process... Is he right? I bet he wants to resell the card at the National and doesn't want to have to wait additional time to receive the card from Ebay.

I am not sure how it works with individual offers sent through eBay. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

In my experience, this will still go through the authentication process. Hopefully you can work with them to just adjust the listing price and have them BIN a lower amount.

No, if it was listed above the threshold, even if you accept an offer below it (regardless of what shipping/tax do, because those are not part of the calculation), it still goes to the authenticator.

At least that's how it's supposed to work and how it generally has been working so far.

Also for what it's worth, as long as they don't live internationally/aren't planning to head out to the National like two weeks in advance, this would probably make it through the authenticators and to them in time, at least based on my experiences with them. Love the process or hate it, at least it's been moving quickly.

Recently bought a nice card, kind of a grail for me tbh.

Well, I just got a refund because it failed authentication process due to: "Doesn't match description or photos"

The photos on the listing look very clean. And I'm not expecting a PSA 10 or anything, but I want this card!

Wondering if I dodged a bullet or got screwed by eBay.

My latest authenticated item only cost me $99. I am happy it went through the process.
