I don't see him choosing the Yankees over the Dodgers.

I know these guys like playing with and hanging with their own countrymen but the Dodgers are Ohtani's team. Padres have Darvish. Cubs have Shota and Suzuki. I can see NY making every effort because NY has a vast Japanese population that would welcome him with open arms in arguably the biggest market for sports. Seeing he'd be the only Japanese player on the Yankees, he'd represent Japan in a big way. Like Matsui and Tanaka did. Adding him would give the Yanks the top 3 or 4 rotation in the sport. On paper that is.

from mlbtr: New York also picks up an undisclosed amount of money it can use to sign an international amateur before the end of the signing period on Sunday. To be clear, the signing bonus space is unrelated to Roki Sasaki. The Japanese star will be part of next year’s amateur class. Teams cannot trade for 2025 bonus allotments until that signing period begins on January 15.

There was a 2024 int'l free agent who didn't sign because of the whole age scandal thing this year. My guess is NYY trying to pick him up with the remaining money.

I think the Yankees have a real issue not having any Japanese players. I'm not sure a guy as young as him would want to say go to NY and be the only Japanese player on the team.

I mean, he's leaving his country..kind of a big step already.....and if he's good he will have 25 close friends it won't matter that he's the only Japanese player

Yankees losing Soto and basically needing/being in on every big free agent is definitely slowing down the players urgency to sign.

Part of it is there is no cap or guaranteed max contracts so the process is just slower. Other sports everyone knows what they're going to get its just a matter of who will it be from.

Yeah but unless we want to go without baseball for years, that’s gonna be the system.

Yankees weren’t initially Max Fried’s top choice — here’s how they lured him to The Bronx

Was it money? That tends to work.

Apparently it was because of the Zoom meeting he had with the Yankees which included Omar Minaya who was with the Padres when they drafted Fried and he had a good connection in it with Matt Blake.

It used to be signing with the Yankees was an honor, those days are long gone. Now they are just being used to raise the prices on other teams and more often than not coming away empty. Still lots of holes to fill and Fried was a nice start. They still have 542 million just to reach the 760 million they were offering Soto.

Not really, that was 760 over 16 years which is only 380 over 8 which is the length of Fried's contract. So more like another 170-200M over next 8 years to get to Soto contract.

I really don't understand what the Cubs are doing. They won't be the highest bidder for Tucker in FA.

Trying to get a really good player and take a shot at making the playoffs in a watered down format? Brewers are losing a lot, so not sure who the fav in the central is.

Sorry I didn’t look that far into it but point taken, either way they still proved they can go to 760 million in this years offers.
