Yesterday, the Yankees added Caleb Durbin and (C) Jesus Rodriguez to the 40 man roster.

They also received (RHP) Carson Coleman from the Texas Rangers as a Rule 5 Draft return.

Considering I never heard much chatter about Durbin until Gleyber wasn’t offered a bid I am going to say if he is their starting second baseman for 2025 it is already a downgrade.

Judge saying he hasn't talked to Soto during the free agency recruitment period here bothers me. I don't know why, but you're the captain of this team, the face of the franchise and the league. I would think getting involved with Soto just to touch base would go a long way in convincing him to stay here. IDK I'm probably over-thinking, over-reacting, but it really seems like it's the wrong move.

Did you read the whole article as to why? I wouldn't want a teammate bugging me on the biggest decision of my career either. Soto knows how much Judge likes him and how much the fans loved him and how he feels towards Judge and the fans. Judge doesn't need to call him to remind him.

I think the biggest thing to come out from Judge was he was asked if he would feel overshadowed by Soto if Hal gave Soto more money than his contract. He basically said no and he wanted to play with the best players. Unless Judge falls off a cliff, this will be his team until his contract is up.

Yankees non-tendered Mayza and Berti.

They also gave Grisham a $5 million contract to avoid arbitration.

Why do they hold onto Grisham? I don't get it

My guess is without knowing if Soto is going to re-sign, the Yankees only have Judge, Dominguez, and Pereira as outfielders on the 40-man roster with the possibility of Cabrera playing there. Grisham is at least defensively better than Cabrera and Pereira.

Rumors say the Yankees offered Soto a 14 year, $630 million contract. That would make him a Yankee until age 40.

That is what he was asking for. He might accept.

What's the going rate? Ohtani got $700 million in monopoly money and financial derivatives, half of which is probably in an FBI evidence lockup right now. $630 cash for a player half as good as Ohtani on offense and unable to pitch seems fair.

Yup. They say he is asking for $45 million a year on average and opt outs after 3 and 4 years.

Its age. He's the first guy in a long time to become a fa at 26 that's been this good in a long time. If Ohtani was 26, he'd probably have gotten 1B.

Sorry Yankee fans. Soto doesn't care about playing for the Yankees or any other team. He is going to the team that pays him the most. He made that clear.

If that's true, than why is he asking each team he meets with about their player development and plans to improve the team?

The opt outs is what would drive me bonkers as a GM/Owner.
Don’t you want to be a guy recognized as the face of the team? Judge is what, 33 next season?

As trite as it sounds, putting on the pinstripes means something.

At a certain point its like, where do you want to play? The marginal difference in the money is immaterial at that level. Like is 675M vs 650M really going to make a difference?

And you can make that up with endorsements and playoff appearances. Soto is going to make more money on endorsements playing in New York than Toronto. Ironically, his endorsement opportunities increasing was one of the things Hal discussed with him.

They just seemed completely lost in roster construction this year and the idiocy just got papered over by Judge and Soto being amazing and Cole getting healthy in the playoffs. That defense was such an issue and Grisham just didn't even play in the World Series was just weird.

Harper was going into his age 26 season and got 13/330 with nothing deferred. The only way Soto gets to over 600 is deferring. I'd guess he gets something around Ohtani's AAV, which was $46-47M
