Visual appeal of the auto (bold, centered, clean) , image used, and color (not green) led me to this one years ago out of the many TA-SO options available. Still holding it raw too hehe

Think of it like a stock market index for a player. Ohtani's CL score is up over 600% since Jan 1 2022. Doesn't mean all his cards are up 600%, but his market as a whole is up that much. My guess is that the RC autos really skew the data being up like 1000%, while RC base cards and inserts are like up 100-200%.

What's really eye opening to me is the crazy amount of Ohtani rookie cards that came out in 2018 say compared to Juan Soto. Ohtani's print run is utterly massive compared to Soto's print run.

His score is based on 91 of his cards (looks like all 2017/2018 rookies). Though I see a couple of 2019 Diamond Kings cards included in his index too.

Ohtani debuted a couple months earlier and is in pretty much every 2018 release outside of Topps Series 1. Soto has way fewer RC year options but that just goes to show how crazy the market demand for Ohtani stuff is.

And the hobby at this point still ignores Soto. His card prices have not really moved in years. Just proves demand is much more important than supply.

Just viewed some more sales from 130point on 2018 RC cards. Prices seem to be hitting all time highs.

Just for fun, would be nice to see everyone's best Ohtani buy over the years. Please show the card(s), the price paid, and current value! I think this should be very interesting especially if you bought in 2019 or 2020.

Here is a lot I got for a steal at the time
June 2021 for $875
Current value 10k+

I saw the Bowman Sterling Atomic PSA10 sold for 6k yesterday and a raw sold earlier for over 2k.

It was not. There was an HMT55 also used as packing material. That one graded a 10. This was in early 2020 if I remember correctly.

Reminds me on buying raw HMT55s for $10 and HMT25 for $3 after release in 2018. Had HMT32s "thrown in" for $1.50 each as sellers wanted to get rid of the RDs cheap. Got 15 of them and all 15 graded 10s. Still have most of them sitting in a box where they will probably remain for a while. Didn't buy much other Ohtani's except sealed factory sets and unopened material. I was still suffering from DiceK memories when Ohtani made his US entrance.

I've given away $5-$20 cards (at the time) that became $200-$400 cards during the pandemic.

As mentioned, the image impacts the price some but I think the milestone of what he achieved is more notable (these cards commemorate events in his rookie year). Gold /5 and red /1 (color match) are the most attractive foils imo. You honestly can't go wrong with any copy. Sure there are 30 images, but only 10 autos per. 300 is not a lot for a full run.

US Transcendent is even more interesting. 51 autos total for vertical (gold, green. Purple, /1) and 51 for horizontal. 102 autos and they hardly ever pop up now. Many think these are worth less since the #ing is higher, but it's kind of misleading.

Background: I bought both raw and graded them, so not into either for much, want to put on away for a long term told and sell one, but trying to gather opinions for which one would be a better investment hold 5-10 years from now.

Personally I'd dump the Topps Chrome refractor for Bowma Chrome. Main reason being I bought tons of Chrome and have 7 refractors, multiple prisms & other refractor variants and Bowman Chrome was more cost prohibitive to rip in quantity so all I have is a single Bowman Chrome rookie.

I paid $65 for the Stadium Club variation, $330 for the white jersey SSP, and $200 for the Downtown. Too lazy to try to figure out what they're worth now. The Stadium Club card was a memorable purchase because I found it on whatever that sketchy app was where you could meet up with people locally to buy stuff. It ended up being a nice, older dude who had some pretty interesting cards for sale. I would have loved to pick through his collection.

What a time to be buying Ohtani in 2018 and 2019! Perspective is very interesting. I am sure everyone on here wishes they had bought much more in the past. It is fun seeing all these amazing buys. I wonder if those starting to collect Ohtani now will feel the same in the next 5 to 10 years. Should be a fun ride going forward.
