Disagree, globally basketball in terms of viewership and participation is much bigger than baseball, its one of the few truly global sports. Tennis, cricket and F1 are probably bigger than baseball globally. Basketball is also big in Brazil, Argentina, western Europe, the balkans, Greece, Turkey & australasia, in addition to USA & China. Only one baseball player cracks the ESPN World Fame 100 (Bryce Harper at 99) compared to 16 from basketball (including 3 in the top 11) http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/sto...-fame-100-2019

Pop down Holloway Road and stop ten people and ask them who Ja Morant is.

I grew up a couple of miles from there and we used to play basketball almost as much as football and we all used to follow the NBA.

Luckily we don't need to ask 10 truly random people (who probably haven't heard of a lot of young footballers) on Holloway Road, the good people as ESPN did a more thorough job. Business Insider have a similar top 20, again with 3 NBA players and zero baseball.

Basketball is infinitely more popular than baseball around the world.

I was a couple of miles the other way just at the top of archway road, literally on the A1 which might explain my childhood asthma lol. Can't have been too many other Leeds fans around at the time, would have been mostly Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool / Man Utd (depending on decade)?

You'd be be surprised how many Leeds there is in London

I know your area well, I used to drink in the Woodman quite a bit and the Wrestlers. Used to date a lass who lived up near Kenwood house.

It had its positives, certainly appreciated it more in hindsight after I lived in south east london for 6 years (a mix of millwall fans and new builds).

Looks like Pele autographed cards are seeing a nice little spike in price.

When was the last time you were at a LCS? Last time I checked most of Canada has been under the hardest of lockdowns this side of the world.
What you say about soccer shows how much you are out of touch and bitter.
But don't come on here lying about explaining who mbappe is at an LCS. Which we know you never did.
Since 2018 a cardshop in the US or Canada is the last place anyone has to explain who he is.

While I enjoy my current living in sunny California (especially this time of year, when its unseasonably in the 90s while back home its below 20!)
I go back to Canada enough (sadly not since 2019) and visit the shops there to know, that they know who Mbappe is.

Honestly believe with the death of Maradona, people are beginning to take notice on Pele as he isn't a young lad either. May be time to buy an On-Card Auto of his to just hold onto.

I agree. And with the documentary coming out on NetFlix next month...

I'm trying to find out what his first on-card auto is before these potentially blow up.

Anyone know what his first on-card autographed card is?

It has to be the Sportsking but his first licensed would be Flawless I believe. Also the Topps Dynasty and Topps Baseball Autos of his do well. I think if you can find a 2017 Nobility Auto of his which in theory should be the cheapest licensed auto of his on the market.

Thank you!

I know Sportkings was licensed by Pele himself through a contract, which is nice, but there's a definite bias towards team licensing, no doubt.

I posted a couple weeks back that I would prove just how popular Mbappe is...

(I know 95% of the forum doesn't argue this but for the 13s that see otherwise)

I dont pass this place often, because its Deep in the Valley.
For as long as I can remember in my 8 years living in the Valley.
This resto used images of CR7 to advertise its fish dishes
Then when Cristiano took his talents to Turin. He was replaced by Yamaz Rodriguez in a Real uni.
This past summer they finally updated it with a more relevant player don't you think?

Considering this is Los Angeles. Where the dodgers and Lakers rule, and are world champions. The fact that this place chooses soccer stars over that to advertise should be enough to tell you what the future will hold.

Mbappe is globally famous, but not nationally famous in the US if that makes sense. I'd imagine he can go most places here without getting recognized. Professional soccer is still a niche sport here, but it is becoming mainstream. Television coverage of the pro leagues and the internet are aiding the growth. I think the card market is largely driven by speculators here salivating at the idea of a huge global audience.

Who cares what the general population thinks. Those same people probably dont know who pikachu is. Not their fault they are ignorant. You on the other hand probably think team rocket are the stars of Pokemon.

I agree with the last few posts, i am based in europe so cant speak on America but i dont know a single person who has even a passing interest in soccer and doesnt know Mbappe. K13 might be right about general people knowing Zlatan and Rooney before these guys now but only because they have had 15 years at the top of the game compared to Mbappe's 3/4 years. If this is true it wont last for much longer. On top of this Mbapppe and PSG have a following outside of football. This doesnt matter on the pitch i think it does for cards and fame etc. The collab with Lebron, meeting with Giannis, front cover of fifa 21 all increase his stock. Even the annual NBA Paris game that he attends helps. I dont own any of his cards but in terms of his fame in Europe theres no question and surely America will be the same too.

People that go to an LCS are all sports fans.
Not one person has ever asked the owner if he has any of his cards.

He's not on TV highlights, not in the general media. You guys are stuck in 2018. No one follows the french league.

Everything is about Messi/Ronaldo, EPL and Lewandowski breaking records. That's mostly in the news.
The only talk about him is from transfer news.

Honestly, no one really cares about Lewandowski either but Mbappe has better long term potential now so that drives his prices. I get you feel Lewandowski has been slighted but he is a good striker who had the bad luck of playing in the time of two GOATs, Messi and CR7 and playing on a bad national team. With Bundesliga being a 1 team league and has been for some time you might as well compare it to the French League these days anyway. It's certainly top to bottom well behind the EPL, La Liga and arguably Serie A.

As to Mbappe, globally sure all these guys are going to be known to most people because there are so many people that watch soccer especially the WC but I should think he's not a household name in any sense of the word like a CR7 or Messi is and certainly not in the US. He might be at some point.

As far as potential which is what this thread is about he is known in the hobby in the US and that is what matters. When cards start selling for $1000s people start talking about it and that is what matters and like it or not that success of soccer will be dependent on US collectors. People might not like to hear that but I think it is the truth.

Could we create a thread that lists all the key footballers and their most desirable, rookir/early cards?

I think this would be an invaluable resource and would spur a tremendous amount of healthy debate.
