Last year as a whole happened because people were stuck at home with nothing to spend their money on. When people have lots of extra income and nothing to do with it they spend it on their hobbies. You clearly having been paying attention to certain markets this past year like Pokemon cards. They have exploded due to the current climate and anyone who says COVID didn't have an effect and people didn't use their stimulus checks to spend on frivolous stuff isn't paying attention. Go look at the Basketball forums last year as there were threads on "What are you going to buy with your stimulus checks" so to say it didn't have any effect is absolutely ludicrous. |

You're saying I knew "who". I never claimed to know "who was coming". I said "sports cards". Come on! Sometimes you sell off the lower end stuff, to build cash for the next purchase. Anyone that knew Herro, Rui and RJ cards were going to take off should buy lottery tickets today.

RJ was third pick in 2019.
Why would anyone sell RJ in 2019, knowing that 2020 was going to take off like a rocket ship? It's you with the crystal ball here, not anyone else - Your loft must be weighted down with 2018/19 and 2019/20 Optic & Prizm boxes knowing they would turn to gold in 2020! Absolutely nobody could have predicted the perfect storm of Covid, scarcity, production issues, delivery issues and people having hundreds of bucks deposited in their accounts in 2020 - because that's the main drivers of the boom. People were so desperate, they opened literally anything they could get their hands on and people raised prices accordingly. Last edited by YayNJ; 01-12-2021 at 12:42 PM. |

Anthony Bennett, Greg Oden, Andrew Bogut, Kwame Brown, etc. Want me to keep going? So what are you going to spend your $600 check on?

SupermanBrandon - totally get what you are saying as I did the same thing that you probably did in the summer of 2019. I saw that nobody was grading soccer cards, I researched young players and started buying Mbappe left and right for next to nothing. Then graded them all and boom.....sitting on a ton of great cards (not just Mbappe). If you did your research in 2019 and was "zigging" while everyone else was "zagging" then you were ahead of the game.
Sometimes I wonder if y'all don't work and just sit in front of your computer screens so you can argue with people. So bizarre....but entertaining

I think there are a few factors for the current stabilisation and uptick in parts of the market
1) Seasonality, things usually peak around May / June and steadily decrease and bottom around winter before rising again. 2) Big swings in supply and demand as we find equilibrium. We had demand >> supply in the summer, then lots of people got cards graded or started selling what they had and supply >> demand. Some of that excess supply has been eaten up and interest is coming back so the pendulum starts to move the other way. As we find equilibrium we'll have more market imbalances each way but like a pendulum as time goes on the swings get less extreme. 3) Stimulus checks. I'm not a huge proponent of the theory that it's the main driver as it's very much a US thing and it's been a global surge. I think it's a factor just not as big as people think. 4) More releases on the calendar, it keeps more eyes on the hobby than before.

People buying cards don't care for government checks.

I recognize the attempt at humor to lesson the blow that you just got served but you can buy your own flowers and chocolates with your stimulus check. Should we start another thread so you can post what you want as flowers and chocolates but those don't cost $600 or was there a big market increase on those too? |

.. but you see, there's thousands of people similar to you that *DID* plough hundreds of thousands into the hobby during spring and early summer 2020 because of their covid cash, money that would have never have been in the hobby otherwise. *rubs hair* |

I know some will disagree with me here, but I still think these prices are really cheap for Mbappe (full disclosure: I own a number of Mbappe cards). To what others have said, I also compare Mbappe to Luka. Yes basketball is basketball, the most popular sport in terms of the market. However, Mbappe has multiple league titles, and a World Cup. Compare that to Luka, who has a Euro league title (which is excellent, of course). You want a Luka Silver PSA 10? It will cost you. An Optic parallel? Easy mid five figures. A Courtside Zebra? Listed price is in the high five figures (80k OBO), with a BGS 10 over hundreds of thousands (600k OBO). That is why I think cards like the Mbappe red checkboard select at 2k was a great price, and the Zebra at 7k is still a great price (even raw). I am not as sold on the mass produced Prizm, but Parallel Prizm? Of course. 2018 Optic low printed parallels? Absolutely. Plus, and this is where I think the Mbappe and Luka market differs: I don't believe additional championships are priced into Mbappe's rookie cards like they may be with Luka. If Mbappe never won another major tournament, I still think 2k for a PSA 20 low pop select is a great price. But if he wins a CL, Euro, or 1 more World Cup (and is more seriously compared to Pele or Maradona)? The sky is the limit on pricing. For Mbappe, we don't have NT RPAs out of 99. What we have are numbered Prizms, parallel Optics (at least the 132 France one, which I think is better than the PSG non-name on the card Optic/Donruss), lower print run Topps Chrome, and we have low pop 2017 Select. We are still early, everyone. |

Mbappe will never seriously be compared to Pele or Maradona.
Lets just cut that out now. |

Ok:
https://www.chicagotribune.com/90min...402-story.html https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/mbap...w1evwwzvksztit Like it or not, the comparisons are already starting, and Pele himself said amazing things about Mbappe. |
