I’ve said it before (and got laughed at), but making him the closer would be a great answer if someone smarter than me can figure out how late-game ABs impact his ability to warm up.

He could be John Smoltz with 40-50 HRs for the rest of his career

UNICORN!
I get that the Dodgers/Roberts have a plan of him pitching up to 5 innings, but last night he was at 68 pitches through 5. I mean doesn't it make sense to limit the # of pitches he throws, not the # of innings? I mean if he had tossed 5 IP and only thrown 50 pitches, Roberts still would have pulled him from the game? The fact the Dodgers pen immediately choked away the lead the inning after he got pulled makes it look all the worse.

Also not sure if it was mentioned yet, but Ohtani is the first player since ARod to hit 50 HRs in back to back seasons (and we all know he juiced). Who knows who the last clean player was to hit 50 back to back....guessing Griffey Jr off the top of my head? He hit 56 back to back in 97-98.

he could prob be a good closer.. it's much more valuable for the team to have him as a starter, which he has always been

I need to see Shohei DH, pitch, and play the OF all in the same game this postseason. Topps Now card for sure. Lol
Though now that I think about it, I'm not even sure if that's possible.

Yeah, he only pitched the 9th.
He was DH'ing during most of the game....does that mean that Japan burned the DH to let Ohtani close out the 9th? And if the game had went to extras, once Ohtani left the game as a pitcher they would have had to bat subsequent pitchers at DH?

Grab what you can, guys. He's 31 and already a living legend. Even if the dodgers make an early playoff exit, WBC is right there to shine every light on him as captain Japan. Too many tailwinds to not pull the trigger on cards you can afford.

So basically unless his arm falls off or he gets swept up in another gambling scandal (but for real this time), he will not have an "offseason" where there's a lull in his market.

So - he hasn’t always been a starter, right?

I mean if Giancarlo Stanton can play RF, Ohtani can play RF too.

Could you imagine seeing him bat 1st in the 1st inning. Smash a HR then head out to RF. Rob a HR while playing said RF. Then come in as a pitcher in the 7th to close the game while hitting another banger as a pitcher

It just came to me that if he was playing the OF to be an option to close, it's not like he would only come in in the 9th. Depending on when he made his last start, he could go several innings to close out a game if necessary, not just 1.

And the way the Dodgers bullpen has been imploding on almost a nightly basis, they may actually need him to pitch multiple innings in relief in the postseason.

Like, imagine a WS where he wins a couple games as a SP, smashes several HRs, makes a few nice plays in RF, and then closes out game 7 to clinch the WS. I mean holy god, his market would go supernova.

Ohtani played the OF for 7 games in 2021, 4 of which he was the starting pitcher so it wouldn't exactly be unprecedented

I have one of his OF practice gloves that's photomatched

That’s really cool!

Ohtani as an OF is one of my favorite Immaculate Grid hacks.

Ohtani in the OF, though I guess he didn't actually have any balls hit his way so he was just chilling.

Compilation of him playing the OF...all from his playing days in Japan. Holy crap, he absolutely cannon-armed that guy at 3B first play. lol
