It's so obvious that Jasson is the better option that it hurts my brain. There's nothing wrong with Verdugo being the 4th OF if Judge/Soto need a day off their feet in the coming weeks.

Verdugo has had a .564 OPS since Aug 1. Last 10 games he's only had 1 XBH and zero walks. His only good defensive metric is his arm strength; everything else is below average. There's nothing about Verdugo's game that is irreplaceable.

Exactly and adds another reason why Cashman and Boone need to go if they are dumb enough to think Verdugo is better than Dominguez.

Think of it as sort of a contingency plan for both Cole and the Yankees. If Cole regressed hard after signing then obviously he opts in. If he's been really good like he has been, then he opts out.

If he opts out, then the Yanks can look where they are from an organizational standpoint. If they believe they are still in a window, they add a year and keep him (makes Cole happy too). If they think there's no way that they would be competitive anytime soon, then they let him go.

Remember, this deal was conjured up as the uncertainties of the CBA renewal were starting to form.
