I didn't realize the average Joe baseball card collection was over $20,000 in 2019, I guess I'm one of the poors I keep hearing about

Talking about the cost of Shohei cards before his MLB breakout is equivalent to someone making the argument that NVDA was 1/15 the price 5 years ago.

They included negro league stats a while ago and there were several TWP players (or position changes) in that league. Some very talented players that never got the fame or recognition.

I can't find any. Ruth didn't do it. Paige didn't do it. Spahn didn't do it. Bullet Rogen didn't do it. Bob Caruthers didn't do it. Jose Mendez didn't do it.

Not sure where that stat came from.

According to Elias/official MLB stats, Ruth had 501 Ks. But I'm pretty sure they're the only two.

Not Cy Young or Walter Johnson, but I guess the 500 Ks is the easy part so they may not be household names. Definitely have to be old time dudes that pitched (and therefore batted) every few days.

That's odd. Fangraphs and baseball reference both have him at 488

500 K's isn't so easy for for some of those old-timers. And the guys who did pitch enough to get it didn't bat enough to get to 1000. Most hitting stats for primary pitchers have Walter Johnson having them most hits at less than 600.

John Montgomery Ward - 2,100+ hits at the plate and 921 Ks on the mound.

He also won 47 games as a pitcher his second season (2.15 ERA) and had 111 SBs as a position player 9 years later.

Baseball has changed a ton in the 150 years between their careers, but Sho has a lot of work to do to pass most of Ward’s career stats other than HRs

Good ole JMW! Those were the days….lol I wonder what talent was back in the 1890’s lol.

Anybody have his RPA?

Why is this guy not referred to as the GOAT?

Half of the people who responded to the net worth thread are millionaires.

I’ll bet that most of them were millionaires six years ago as well, and you didn’t need to be a millionaire to own those cards in 2019. Not even close to it.

Dug up this picture that I think I took in the spring of '21, maybe '22. Sadly, no prices. At the time, I think I was more shocked by all the black label Acunas than I was by the red and gold Ohtanis.

In addition to John Ward mentioned above, there is also Dave Foutz who has 1253 career hits and 790 career strikeouts and Kid Gleason who has 1946 career hits and 744 career strikeouts.

My mom used to take me there to buy school clothes. I wasn't a fan of the fact that I had to get my pants from the "husky" section...

So how is everyone feeling about Ohtani's performance so far this year? I am overall very happy with his on the field performance and the fact that his cards are stable or up from last year. I was worried about him coming back as a pitcher, but not being as good as when he was with the Angels. But so far he looks to have mainly recaptured his old form on the mound.

I do have some mixed feelings though! Last year was an incredible year at the plate with a 50/50 season. Sort of little let down this year. I know the SB's would be down this year was hoping for 50/30.
