Lots more righties than lefties overall, so even if he goes a complete 0-for-forever against LHP he may still be effective enough to be a regular because of the defense.

It really is interesting. He went .260/.330/.830 with only 2 SB in 32 games (10 SB pace) and still put himself on a full season 5.6 WAR pace in his MLB stint last year. Health and just a small uptick in any of those and he could flirt with 6-7 WAR pretty easily.
The only player to have a .600 obp was Bonds in 04. Post WWII which when you think about it is as far back as the Civil War was back then, there have only been 7 over .500 obp seasons. The upper limit feels more like around .450 - .475.

I want his 1.0+ OPS to carry over to the majors this year

Truthfully, the best bet looks like Alec Burleson at 100:1. Garret Mitchell at 40:1 looks like a solid bet too. Of the "contenders" I'm probably on Tovar at 12:1.
Agreed here, never really enough value on his ROY odds. His Stolen Base odds though have moved from 45:1 to now around 15:1. I still think it's a good value at 15:1, fastest player in the league and he showed a few glimpses in the preseason that he may have an interesting strategy when it comes to the new pitch clock rules.

This would be absolutely amazing numbers for anyone. Still, I think a .370-380 OBP in year 1 would be a great outcome, would have put him in the top 10-15 in MLB last season. Again, he only put up a .330 OBP last season but even with that still posted a 5.6 WAR pace. A small tick up there can only help.

Wouldn't that be amazing? If he does, I think the Trout comps will start to come despite the size. Really the only hold up with him is the size, all the numbers are there.

The point I was trying to make is that .600 obp is wholly unreasonable as outside of Bonds, the top hitters of the last 40 years top out around .450-.475.

Not in recent history. At least not anyone of note that I’m aware of. Walker will be in ‘23 Update at worst. Zero percent chance he’s held for 2024.

This seems crazy to me! Who is the favorite, Acuna?

I can't believe he was ever 45:1. That would be a good bet even if he had two broken ankles.

Yup, it definitely was. At least +4500, might have been higher. I think it was something like Acuna, Mondesi & Mullins as the favorites at the time.

It's gone now but I still think current odds (15:1 ish) and 27.5 for his SB over/under are great plays.

Only 3 AB's due to his spot in the lineup. Torey can be an infuriating manager at times. Between that and bullpen management.

When you have elite young talent like those two on an otherwise unremarkable team, just put them in the spots you hope they'll man for the next decade and let it ride.

Agreed all around. While I understand the decision, what better way to start the season than saying "we don't care if he doesn't hit lefties great yet, we are beating you guys (Dodgers) and the odds this season!" and just let them fly and learn, maybe even exceed expectations.

Agree wholeheartedly. Challenge him to improve on the fly at age 22. Tell him he’s the lead off hitter every day. He strikes me as a kid who will adjust to at least be decent vs LHP. The guy has 660 ABs as a professional.

Even more weird is he's batting 5th vs RHP.

Fastest player in baseball beats out an infield grounder and then hits a 432-foot bomb next AB!

He looked lost in his first matchup with Kershaw last weekend. Definitely not the case last night, even his one out was very solid contact.

Early going but 5-for-13 (.385) against LHP so far is very nice.

44 plate appearances - ZERO walk

You don't need to swing at everything. Take a walk and steal some bases.

That goes against his minor league track record. I wonder if he's being more aggressive or if the pitchers are just attacking more?

Amazingly he's hit into a DP already this year, giving him 2 for his career. He only hit into 3 DP in 657 PA in the minors.
