Mediocre is putting it nicely. His May and June numbers are Corbin Carroll level bad. Yet people are still spending thousands on BCAs.

Meanwhile, Ezequiel Tovar is showing daily why he's the best 22 year old in the game...

Bo Jackson led MLB in Ks hit the same as EDLC and was more popular than Michael Jordan at that time.

EDLC may be out of the league in 2 years, I don’t know….but he is electric and creates moments. He is why people started watching sports. You’re there to create memories with your family/kids/friends and be entertained.

Arraez could hit .430 and kids just don’t care. Elly could air mail a ball into the first base field seats at 110mph and it’ll lead SportsCenter.

Very solid so far. Would love to see him take some more walks and cut down on the strikeouts. The ratio is horrible!

On Elly De La Cruz bobblehead night there were 42,427 tickets sold. That’s the biggest non-Opening Day weekday attendance ever at Great American Ball Park.

Nobody is arguing his popularity. He’s just not going to be a very popular player if he hits .230 with 25 HRs and 230 Ks a year.

Not to you, or non-Reds fans. But 25 HR with 70 SB, electric defense, a likeable personality, will endear him to Reds fans for sure. We love him in spite of his current flaws. And at 22, I'm less concerned with them than you seem to be. But then again, I'm a fan and not a sports card investor.

Not for you and that’s ok. Just telling you how Reds fans are STARVED for anyone that isn’t just vanilla ice cream.

One of the most beloved player in the last two decades was popular because he dove into fences and walls. It don’t take much.

honest question, obv there is no questioning his speed as its clearly elite and defense is much improved despite leading mlb in errors (for ss). But how will Reds fans react if he's closer to say .210-.220 avg and 12-15 HR range.

If you were to use a weighted moving avg (3 HR over last 150 AB vs 8 HR in first 90) he's going to project far closer to 15 then 25, and similar approach to BA. This would project him to be like Jorge Mateo with better defense as SS rather then 2b.

I'm not questioning his ability to correct and get back on track in the future, like you said hes 22.... I'm just curious what do Red fans say if he does his sub .200 for rest of season?

Sub .200 avg would be like Top 5 on the team.

I think you underestimate the power of disappointment and how it can sour a relationship. Right now, Reds fans probably see him closer to what he was in April than what he’s been in May and June. The sample size is getting large enough that his April is looking like an outlier. He’s a low batting average, high K, average power guy who will have his stolen bases limited by his inability to get on base.

Everybody's fandom is personal. That's why there are fan favorites for some teams that are never even league average players. So I can't answer your question for all Reds fans. But the elite things Elly does, and the excitement he brings to the field, even when he is slumping terribly, will likely buy him many years to "figure it out" at his age with many Reds fans. He's just a beloved player by the fans. It's strange that I have to explain this to other sports fans. We all have players we love who aren't Mickey Mantle. So while Elly has potential to be an MVP, he doesn't necessarily have to be for Reds fans.

And you underestimate what it's like to actually be a fan. I will always love Wily Mo Pena. A fan's passion transcends a stat line. Investors don't get it. Fans do.

As long as Reds fans are happy that’s cool but I disagree on the MVP potential, don’t think that will happen.

My Kentucky / southern Ohio friends also got all in a frenzy for Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn.

They just want something to root for since the Reds suck and there's no pro sports around. Hopefully one day they will get a player who can hit the baseball consistently well.

I love the Big Donkey! And 462 HR is nothing to sneeze at.

There was a guy who came up in baseball with much of the same fanfare - Billy Hamilton. That's who EDLC reminds me of.

Not a lot going on in that area.... the bar to whip up some excitement is pretty low.

LOL If you're joking, good one. If not, Interestingly, Elly and Billy have the exact same career HR totals as of today. It just took Billy 11 seasons to get there. Other than being fast base stealers who can play defense, there is very little similarity between them.

Remind me again how you steal a base when you hit a home run? To steal bases you have to actually get on base. I was comparing the hype of the 2 players really - they also have similar speed sets and similar inability to get on base.

Adan Dunn was no slouch. Hit a lot of HRs, sure he struck out a lot but he got on baseball a lot as well. Your friends don't like the Bengals? Last I knew they were still considered a pro sports team?
