Juan Solo is back. Would be great to see him catch fire down the stretch like he did in 2021. Padres need it.

I wish he would play like this for 6 months in a row.
SUCH a great hitter when he’s locked in. |

He's on pace for 290 total bases. His previous high was 297 in 2019.
On pace for a career high in walks. On pace to surpass 100 RBIs for only the second time in his career. On pace to (just about) tie his career high in home runs (on pace for 33, high is 34). On pace for a career high in 2B. On pace for .275 AVG (career AVG is .285). But five weeks..... Arthur

Million dollar question is if/when he restores his former status as a top 3 hobby guy. It certainly seems there for the taking with Trout aging and both Trout and Judge being injury prone.
If he finishes the year strong I expect hype would grow all offseason about him as the smart money buy. |

2020 pace over ~600PAs could maybe move the hobby needle. Pinstripes are the way. Or a JD replacement in LA, perhaps. |

He's nearly at his career averages for this season...but the Ted Williams comparison along with the .351 in shorten 2020 covid season/ .313 avg 2021 season set the bar/expectation that year in, year out, he would be a .300+ / .330 batter. Last season and this season sub .300 avg seasons kinda put him on the back burner in terms of hobby love. His career WAR is indeed great for his young age, but the baked in expectation is that he would continue to trend upwards instead of taking two steps back last/this season. If he can get hot rest of this season and then have an near MVP season next year, interest in his cards will rise again.

Adjusted Batting Wins All-Time, Up to and including Age 24 season:
Ty Cobb 33.6 Mike Trout 29.7 Ted Williams 29.2 Mickey Mantle 26.9 Jimmie Foxx 25.4 Mel Ott 24.8 Juan Soto 23.0 Albert Pujols 22.7 Ken Griffey 20.7 Eddie Mathews 20.5 Seems like a pretty generational list to me. Each and every one of those players has either had or will have grandparents telling their grandkids about how they saw them play. Every single person with an OBP as high as his through his age 24 season is in the HOF except for John McGraw and every single person on that list has been retired for at least 60 years. He's an incredibly special player. Last edited by atk825; 08-02-2023 at 01:09 PM. |
