Good to see someone post Soto’s 2018 Transcendent Auto /25.

Here’s the other version of the card:

Just not the players I would build a team around. Looks lackadaisical too often. Don't think he'll come near the contract Washington offered him. Hope I'm wrong. Have money on them winning the division.

Maybe I'm a crusty old fool in my 40s but I feel like the discount 5 years for 5 weeks is a less than strategic move. Do people really believe someone with the sheer mastery of the strike zone that Soto has suddenly lost all his talent. I have little doubt he'll have a typical Soto season when the full six months are up and lots of people will have ROMO (regret on missing out).

Just my $0.02.

In an injury riddled season, he put up an OPS+ of 129 and had 30% more BBs than Ks. If he's healthy he's a monster. But I'm also not very reactionary.

His prices will probably never be what the once were. Part of it is his play and part is
the economy.

I wish I had sold more but for the most part I have GIGO (glad I got out!)

Great sequence of at-bats yesterday...smokes a ball to centerfield at 102 mph for an out...hits a nicely placed soft ground ball at 65 mph for a single.

His face said it all...he just can't win right now.

One thing people need to look at, is the outs if he's hitting the ball well. He had 2 line drive outs yesterday.

In the 1st, he smoked a ball 106mph to right 370 feet. AN out

Double play in the 3rd, 95mph to 1st

5th, 102 mph 386 feet to center

8th, 65 mph single ground ball lol

10th, 100mph grounder to first

He's getting good contact on the ball at least.

Not sure I would say never. If dude ends up having a really long career and getting to rarified numbers, I think his long term market will be just fine. But yah, in the short term, it's likely that he and JRod have peaked and have to do something really really special to change that.

There must have been some serious money put on him for MVP at the beginning of the season if he's still 5th in odds right now.

Soto has already lost 10 home runs dating back to last years trade to SD due to Petco Park. When he drives/elevates the baseball its to CF/RCF - that's were it is deepest. When Soto pulls the ball its usually a ground ball or something with alot of top-spin so no cheap HR's down the line.

Both balls yesterday are gone if he still in D.C. Last year in the playoffs, zero home runs at home and 2 on the road at Philly to CF/RCF.

He is on pace to lose 10-12 HR's a year at Petco - got one more year of this then he needs to get out to Philly or NYY.

Are you just making up numbers?

Soto is expected to hit more home runs in San Diego than Washington

His power has declined every season for the last 4. His strikeout rate is currently sky high. There are no shortage of players who had some scorching seasons before 25 and then completely lost it(hello Hanley Ramirez, Kris Bryant). His card prices were still super high even after last year. The risk that he may have already peaked is there and it's real and it's significantly higher than it was after 2021, where that risk appeared to be low single digit percent.

If you want to value him like 2023 hasn't happened, go right ahead, there are tons of deals to be had.

Talk about overreaction.

He's still getting solid contact, still walking at a high rate, and his strikeout rate is not "sky high" in today's game. Heck if Soto is striking out a high rate, so must Yordan Alvarez, Mike Trout, Trea Turner, Rafael Devers, etc.

If he wasn't walking still, and wasn't getting solid contact constantly, it would be something else. I still have faith in him bouncing back to his runner up MVP type seasons.
