I would think I would. Everyone who comes here from other companies sees the same problems I see. It’s the employees who have only worked here (ever) who have the COO’s ear which leads to a lack of positive change.

I’ll put it this way: we’ve had a plant trainer for over a year. We have no training program. He had just been tasked this past week with putting something together.

We now have two Quality Improvement managers. One has been here 17 years. He recently told me he doesn’t like coming on the floor anymore because problems he’s been trying to solve for years still persist. The other manager is new and immediately started using the items I reviewed with him as points to focus on.

They are owned now by a private equity group. Their only concern is improving profitability so that they can attract a new owner. The end of 2026 will mark five full years of their ownership.

About 8 months ago, an employee had the strong smell of alcohol. We had no GM at that time, i reported to the COO. One person in management refused to be a second opinion before I escalated the situation. The lead she worked with (not my report) said he didn’t notice anything. They are friends outside of work. A quality assurance employee was the only one who would confirm the employee seemed off. The COO finally agreed to meet with her. His first phrase to her was “you smell like a brewery”.

This is fascinating - it reads like a case study out my old Industrial/Organization Psychology textbook - I almost went into that as a line of work: my professor at the time did consulting on the side and would study dysfunctional companies and offer suggestions on how to make things profitable with reforms/incentives to employees. My favorite case study was one called "Luddites in Lordstown" where workers at an Ohio assembly plant were sabotaging production to prevent mechanization (and job loss) - they would do things like put an empty Coke bottle deep inside the body or exhaust system of a car (with notes saying things like "aha - you found me!") that would not interfere with it running but would clank around and create concern for the driver.

But I'm not sure that the extent of my training would prepare me to deal with the private equity "buy-and-flip strategy" of management.

I have people who think others are mildly sabotaging things to ensure they can work overtime. A machine will run great on one shift. The next shift comes in and it can’t do anything. I was standing near an employee I suspect of doing this on the other shift. I was talking to a technician about something else and I noticed her look back at us repeatedly. So I decided to watch her. She would place herself between me and the controls so I couldn’t see. I didn’t know what she was doing. Happens that one of my leads saw her from the other direction and he said she was changing settings. She left and we couldn’t get even half of her total done that day. She works every second of OT available.

If I accuse her of playing games, the COO would most likely say I’m not a team player.

Would love to see this workplace. Sounds like never-ending fun!

Hey Bnut, I saw the CEO of the PGA tour or US Open do his speech yesterday at the awards ceremony. He said he now knew what a "yinzer" is since the US Open was near Pittsburgh.
