Just a cautionary tale for those submitting high-end Sho.

I recently cracked the BGS 9 ROA Red Ink out and submitted it to PSA. It was an overall very clean card and had no reason to not get a 9. I got an upcharge email for $1,299 expecting a 9 and they gave it a 8.5. For those that don't know, half grades are given at discretion when the main grader and cross checker do not agree on the grade, hence splitting the difference. All I have to say is that you'd need to be a pretty big hater to give the card an 8 - edges were cleaner than many 9.5s. I declined the upcharge, ate the initial grading cost, and resubmitted the card. It smoothly got upcharged again and came back a PSA 9 this time.

Frustrating but it ended up the way it was supposed to. Never give PSA the full service fee upfront until you know they aren't going to screw you.

So glad you didn't accept the 8.5. That's better looking than so many others like its kind in PSA 9 holders. Still my favorite Shohei card.

I’ve seen some 8.5s but didn’t know the reason why they were given out. Will definitely keep in mind if I run into something like this. Thanks for sharing and beautiful card!

Wow that’s infuriating. That’s quite the cost to eat, knowing you have to eat the cost again to resub and still not knowing what the result will be the second time around. Glad it worked out in the end for you TB but I would be peeved!

That was the fastest decline I've ever made for an upcharge . Thank you!

Yes, half grades for PSA in a tweener use case are just lazy. Should just have the lead grader (or master grader) make the call. And Thanks!

It wasn't so bad since I submitted it under a lower service level and amount. If I had submitted it as premium 1 or 2 from the jump, they would have taken my money and I'd be stuck with the 8.5.

The upcharge always sucks, but that's now the cost of doing business to get it in a PSA slab.

I ultimately prefer PSA, but outcomes like this are contradictory to the expertise and knowledge they claim to have. A serial numbered card should not be able to be re-submitted and achieve a better grade.

This isn't a reflection on you personally - I just wish PSA would at least make notes on stuff like this on service levels that high.

Well the 8.5 meant that one grader thought it was an 8 (maybe a bad day?) and the cross checker (most likely) disagreed and thought it should have been a 9. Sure enough, it ended up coming back a 9 the next time. So it's not a complete departure from the logic the first time around.

This came in today. I miraculously pulled this in a break. I’ve actually combed the internet since release and I’ve only seen three of this redemption surface. I do have it listed as I actually don’t “love” the card.

Yeah I think my post earlier came off a little harsh too. Didn't mean your card specifically and chose a weird time to make a point.

Anyway - It's a such a beautiful card and I'm super jelly. Maybe one day. haha

I absolutely concur that the general inconsistency is maddening for such an expensive service.

im just glad you were able to get it out of that BGS slab

Heritage (much like the cards they homage) do not belong in BGS slabs

Haven't been buying much lately but bought this a while back off COMC and submitted through the site so it was a bit of a blind submission. 15/75

I knew it was off centered and had a little white showing but wanted it slabbed. Still a cool one.

The only thing I miss about sho on the angels (besides affordable games) is that city connect uni. Nice.

That jersey is such a good one. I got to be a small part of the Rays city connect jerseys here in Tampa Bay and they will always be very special to me.

I'm still looking for a rare card to add to my collection to commemorate those ones.

Half grades at PSA are not a split between graders. It’s for high eye-appeal within the given grade (e.g. a high eye-appeal 8 gets an 8.5). For that reason, you seldom see it given out.

Great card! I'm still in disbelief they apparently killed Topps Japan Edition, when interest in MLB in Japan has to be at an all-time high...

I was told by an experienced submitter (not PSA employee) that the high eye appeal thing is what they state, but in practice/reality, the half grade is a compromise grade.

You could very well be right, but I am 95% sure the half grade is not replicable in practice (such as this example). Oh well, I hope I never get a half grade again
