Yeah, you two are probably correct. It takes the discerning eye of the sophisticated collector to spot the difference between his rookie auto and his current C-8 auto. Silly casuals would never know the difference.

I can assure you the people who are spending the money to buy his auto cards will notice

I can't say that everyone cares about his early elegant auto but enough people care where it impacts the price.

For now maybe. Long run when there's a million out there people will just want the rookie year or kanji card regardless of an extra curl or two.

Ichiro collectors disagree with you, but nobody has a crystal ball so time will tell.

What non rookie auto of his is more desired than his rookie auto?

I never made a statement that people care about a specific auto over a rookie auto.

It is however well known that the 2001 (rookie year) and 2002 (non rookie year) autos are most coveted because it is his original auto with more elegance. Some people (enough people) notice where it impacts price.

Great, yet ANOTHER auto to collect!

Now, time to share some more cardboard!

Found this little guy mixed in with some random stacks of commons I had tucked away in some cardboard boxes today:

2018 Panini Father's Day Panini Collection Future Frames Shohei Ohtani #8

And another recent pickup from 2024 Cosmic (I am an absolute sucker for this set!)

2024 Topps Chrome Cosmic Shohei Ohtani Stars in the Night #17

2020 Topps Gypsy Queen Shohei Ohtani #SO Black Auto 1/1

Scooped this up on Goldin last night for the PC.

I've been eyeing his GQ cards for awhile and couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger until I saw this black border auto and simply wasn't going to be denied.

Nov 2024:

Last night:
https://goldin.co/item/2024-topps-ch...htani-1-1lp155

Either the first auction wasn't paid for, or someone took a haircut on a very short term flip.

Wouldn't it be cool if these large auction houses would let us know which items went unpaid for. Who am I kidding, that doesn't help them sell more stuff.

Auctioning high end Ohtani in the winter off-season is certainly a choice I wouldn't make but maybe the $$ was needed
Sweet GQ auto 1/1 though!

For those who aren't fond of the C8... is this really supposed to be an improvement?

Fantastic card! Congrats Punctilious on the pick up! 1/1's are always fantastic grabs

Not to me. I always thought a japanese autograph, in any form, is cooler than english autographs. But thats just my opinion

Edited my post while you were commenting to include both the old and 'new & improved' images. I've only pulled his rookie signature but his post rookie never bothered me, this one does nothing for me and could easily do without.

Lucky you! I've never had the great joy of pulling a Shohei auto. Best card I suppose I've pulled of him was a Heritage Nickname. But again, I dont rip too much. That's on the list of things I hope to experience!

Yeah I'm not really a fan of this english auto. It'll be a novelty for awhile but if it becomes his new "regular" auto, it'll make me appreciate every rendition prior... pre/post TJ auto's, the squiggle, the kinda return to the rookie auto (didnt know about that one) and the C-8.

Also to touch on the prior convo about Ichiro's auto, I recently grabbed Ichi's 2001 SPx auto, specifically for the old style. So I would agree with TB that auto styles do matter but again I guess that makes me discerning?

Early 1/1s autos are a good way to insulate against a flood of squiggly autos

As a base set builder I ripped a lot of retail to complete sets because it was much cheaper in the long run even though the guaranteed odds weren't in my favor. In years prior, I did relatively well with retail Bowman exclusive green refractor autos and busted 10 twelve box cases of retail packs hoping to land Ohtani. Wouldn't be so fortunate but did pull the Luis Robert and over 150 Ohtani RCs.

Shifted my focus when Topps Chrome released and pulled a numbered Ohtani from a blaster along with a decent amount of other autos. Decided to build the rookie auto set, which got me buying hobby cases also for the guaranteed 2 autos per box but continued to buy any & every retail format to build the refractor, prizm, sepia & pink refractors sets; still need one sepia and prizm to complete the sets of Goldschmidt and Jose Ramirez, can't remember who of which.

Pulled a second Ohtani auto from a hobby case and only then realized the numbered auto was a purple refractor. That's when the chase went full bore but I never was fortunate to pull a third.

I'm content with the two autos I have in addition to the many sets I was able to build and all the additional extra RCs. I don't grade or sell so all of it is still raw.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun. I almost bought a box of '18 Chrome to rip a few months ago at my LCS but I couldn't pull the trigger on something I know I'd almost overwhelmingly lose on. And yet the draw of an Ohtani auto is strong...

Could be wrong but between '18 Topps and Bowman, only the Bowman product has live Ohtani autos. Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome have expired redemptions.

Is that so? I thought some of Sho's '18 TC Autos were redemptions, while most were live.
