Looks like the original listing was $5,995 and it sold for $5,400. Not a bad sign

Anyone else noticing any interesting trends in the Ohtani market right now?
His first year Dodgers stuff is effectively a 2nd rookie year for him given the huge premium it gets over Angels vet stuff.

People want PSA 10s of nice paralells in Dodgers unis and are willing to pay a good amount. Super ripe target for grade-to-flip and we haven't even caught the Spring Training wind in our sails yet.

Rookie autos are going nuts right now. The scary thing is that there's more room to climb with his C-8 auto getting smattered on everything out there.

For sure, although it will be interesting to see if the demand persists after there are multiple years of cards available in a Dodger uni.

While the recent trends are factual, I do not think the 1st year Dodgers prices are going to hold up after 9 years of subsequent releases. While some Dodger cards will standout and do well, most will come back to rookie year.

I agree. Flippers tried pumping Lebron 1st year Lakers cards and those fell off a cliff. Rookie year is always king and a safe bet.

I noticed you sold a RC auto yesterday. Are you still having to sell some RC autos to buy other more expensive RC autos you want more? Or can you buy whatever new RC autos/cards you want and keep everything else knowing it should only go up in value over time?

I did - that sale set an all-time high for any card in that release. And yeah, I only sell to buy and was recouping some funds from a few Goldin/PWCC wins the other week. Ended up basically being a shuffle

One of the wins was this less than perfect transcendent auto. I knew the ink would put off other suitors and it luckily flew under the radar. It's at PSA now

So from everyone's response it appears pretty much all of his cards are trending up in value! And everyone that buys and holds is in pretty good shape right now! I am still hoping the SP and SSP RC cards I tend to favor will become more appreciated over time as people pay attention to pop reports.

I also seem to keep on buying rainbow foil RC cards, and they seem to keep on not going up

One thing I've learned amassing my Ohtani collection over the last three years is which cards to target. I doubt I'll focus in on a modern player in the same way for a while but if I do I'll end up doing much better after the lessons I've learned in the Ohtani market.

One thing I am very pleased with is that this thread has guided many people to make some great collecting (and investing if that's what you do) decisions. It's one of the best resources out there.

Sean, just keep buying them Stadium Club autos and you'll be fine. Blue chips are blue chips.

Thinking the same, why I snapped up one of these ...

Note, I picked this up for significantly less than say a "standard" Chrome Gold refractor, those are going for like a grand.

I feel the moment dictates the desirability of this one, his first appearance as a Dodger.

Thankful I shied away from the Soto Yankees cards, but was tempted.

I hate the Dodgers, but I love Sho, and that is a nice card!

It's the pre opening day run up on prices...especially for Ohtani '18 RCs (most everything in that space is seeing some sort of run up, some more than others depending on set/brand loyalty then rarity). What will be interesting to see is how he performs on the field and whether that translates into in season incremental run ups or whether prices run flat for several months before nearing post season. Ohtani card values started running up this off season earlier than all other players...as it should be given his popularity.

That's quite a steal. Mine raw was $20 and is an 8 at best.

exactly. the assigned graade scared folks off for sure, but i wonder if they realize the card is a "pop 3" in a PSA 8 with none graded higher

This is the best deal I ever got on a purple Ohtani back in 2022 (pop 6, none higher):

Hadn't checked his market in a while and just saw the last sale of a 9 was $200. I did alright.

Low pop on a hard to find card does matter over raw versions.

for sure. my point was more along the lines of "why would i buy such a low assigned grade?"

Underrated comment. Perusing this thread definitely gave me a better grasp of the Ohtani market.

On a related note, where are people at now on Shohei’s 2020/2021 auto, the one in between his great rookie auto style and the current C-8 style? The “squiggle, graceful swoop and squiggle”.
