Starting price and bid history suggest a brand new bidder decided to bid 20+ times on a five figure card for their first ever purchase... or it was shilled.

Completely agree. I've been sorting through my vast collection of cards as of late and I've been thinking to myself "In 20 years will I be happier owning 100's of cards of decent players, or would I rather have a few rally nice cards of Ohtani, even if his market somehow plummets". I've been selling tons of stuff from the past few years at a loss, but it's better than just collecting dust.

I've done a lot of trimming of my modern PC of late. For active players other than Ohtani its down to 8 slabs now. I also have a topload binder with a lot of active Mariners in it but that's mostly $5-50 cards.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I can't find it.

Why did Ohtani's signature radically change a few years ago? Did it coincide with his exclusive deal with Topps/Fanatics?

I read once on here that it was due to his first surgery but I have no idea if that’s true

Both.

2018-pre TJ signatures are full and beautiful, then there was a intermediate full auto, and then he started signing a million things and went to the C-8 auto.

His signature changed from his first Bowman auto's to the Bowman chrome autos due to his surgery.

I assume that the second change in 2020/2021 was due to time and having to sign so many autos.

Its another reason why nice RC autos sell for a premium. I also imagine non RC autos in the old style will ultimately be more valuable than the new auto style.

Don't forget about this one, which is even worse than his current signature IMO.

At the end of 2021 he briefly went to this beautiful, flowing signature before shortening it to the current one.

I never realized until now that his current auto is literally just a part of that auto!

I actually like that top one better than his current one! I was unaware of the bottom auto...it is a beauty!

Are the recent high end Transcendent sales legit?

Transcendent kinda sucks, so surprised to see such high sales.

Yes, the premium obscure sets are starting to get their due (transcendent, luminaries, definitive, luminaries, etc). No stone unturned.

Do we know what other cards he briefly signed his old rookie style auto?

Thoughts on the 2018 Topps archives fan favorites autos? Not sure about the design but it’s a rookie auto

Agree that niche sets do not rise at the same rate as the big three (Bowman, TC, Heritage), but some of them just have the most choice looking autos. Got this in today after two weeks in customs . I love GQ BW autos.
