It's easy to see the horizontal creases on the Mays card but the Mantle is a lot tougher.
Either way, I think that is the best looking 53 Mantle "1" I have ever seen.

Great pick ups, Illustrious. Congrats.

Checked another one off of my Yankees vintage wish list - this one becomes the oldest card in the collection!

yeah man, that Mantle looks too good to be a 1, unless the photo isn't showing certain defects, idk. that's crazy.

the way that card looks from the picture, it looks like a 4 at worst.

Here's a different angle where the creases are apparent:

honestly, even then, at a 1, that's insanely pretty and still seems low. idk exactly how PSA grades vintage cards.

I've always believed/thought that SGC has graded tougher than PSA but I think, likely due to the scandal, PSA has toughened things up lately?

Maybe its always been any creases deem a card a 1, I'm not sure, and although I am not a fan of creases at all, I'd gladly purchase that Mick any day of the week.

I realize there have been a million threads on the various grading companies, but put me in SGC's corner. I like their new slabs. I realize PSA carries maybe a slight premium in vintage, but maybe that gap is narrowing. I have bought mostly PSA and the differences between good PSA 4s and bad 4s is amazing.

As for the Mantle, it's a great looking card. You can see some amazing differences in cards graded poor. I saw a '57 Spahn at the last show I attended that was a '1' and it looked like a 7. Turned out it had a pinhole that you couldn't see without a microscope and I guess they have to give it a one. Not all 'poors' are created equal that's for sure and that's why you see such a tremendous variance in prices on them especially with highly sought after vintage cards.

Here's a recent Goudey I picked up. Love the colors on this one. I only need 236 cards to complete this all-time great set....

I got this card a couple of months ago on the Vintage Buy/Sell thread of this very forum. It might have been the best deal I have gotten on a card anywhere. The upper left has some scratches that indent but don't penetrate the surface. You can't see it at all, but the guy told me about it because he's a straight shooter. Anyway, I still can't believe I own this card. That yellow totally pops in the SGC holder IMO.

added the 1.5

so here's what they look like now:

the 1.5 has a better surface and corners, but a little off centered from top to bottom compared to the 1.

I agree.

give me an identical graded sgc at a lesser price, with better eye appeal
any day of the week.

I too, love the new holders, they make the card "pop" to me.

I am in the SGC camp as well. I have found their grades to be a bit tighter than PSA but the prices they bring are much cheaper than PSA's which makes it great for a collector like me.

Here is my latest pick up which leaves me just 65 cards short of this set with Mantle being the only HOFer that I need.

Just picked up this 55 Bowman Mays. Pretty sweet copy for an EX condition card.

Nice Aaron. That's an uncorrected error right?

yep, the reverse negative. funny how about 30 years later they did the same thing with a Brave but it was Dale Murphy in the Upper Deck set.

Picked these two up to fill in 2 year holes in my collection. I now have at least one card from every year 1949 - 2020.
