Someone find me two or three of the same card, cheap as possible, in newer PSA cases, autographed. I want to run a test. Low grades are fine, even preferred.

Don't worry guys, I got it covered. Doing three PSA cards from 2022 and a couple additional PSA cases from 2025. I believe they "upgraded" their case standards in 2024 so I had to go with some new cards to make sure we got the latest and greatest UV protection cases.

For the 2022's I'm going to do three tests, one will be exposed to daily natural light, one will be expose to no natural light but will be exposed to heat, and the other stored away in the dark.

For 2025 one will be exposed to natural light and the other PSA case to nothing but darkness, then I'm also gonna test a couple of the same card the same ways but in top loaders.

Don't see a reason to test BGS or SGC or whatever the flavor of the month is since everyone says they're going under anyway.

I despise graded cards myself, I'm willing to bet these holders probably don't protect squat. It's all marketing. They'll use words like, "protect up to 90%", if they word this stuff correctly they can essentially guarantee nothing and be held responsible for nothing but lead you to believe otherwise. Anyone have any marketing material by PSA/BGS about UV protection?
I despise graded cards myself too and have removed my fair share to put into my collection ungraded. It's at a point where it's become too much of a hassle to do, so it makes me wonder if our cards are safer in these holders or not.

The 1T is the normal slab, and the 1LR is the newer medical grade plastic. You can see this at a bottom corner of each slab.

Sometimes, you can see an oily pattern in the plastic if light hits it at the correct angle. I believe this is the UV protection, and I have seen it on a slab before [forget which]. So I do believe at least some slabs have some sort of UV protection. I also remember reading somewhere a long time ago that BGS slabs are supposed to have as much UV protection as possible while still keeping the plastic clear.

Good to know the slab difference! I've pivoted to a new player to test the PSA slabs. Gonna do both the 1T and 1LR slabs, also a one touch and top loader all of the same card. Assuming people accept some of my offers. And for science they better accept!!!

Are there any One Touch cases that are said to be different from each other or that I should be testing? For one of my tests I have 6 of the same card autos and I want to test some One Touch cases but I don't generally use them so I'm not sure what the difference in any of them are.

Here's what Ultra-Pro says about their one touch:

"Ultra PRO's ONE-TOUCH holders are premium trading card storage cases designed as the final destination for your collectible trading cards. The two-piece ONE-TOUCH holders are uniquely designed with slide-in hinges and magnetic closure so you'll never have to use a screwdriver again. The holder uses UV-blocking additives to protect your card from harmful UV rays and is made with non-PVC materials to provide acid-free protection - ensuring your valuable hit retains its condition while under the display."

I have multiple versions of Ultra-Pros, some can just say "35" which is the card thickness it holds. Another says "35 F5" but I don't know what the F5 is for. Then I've got another Ultra-Pro one touch that says "35 M2" if anyone knows what that means.

Cardshellz states the following on their 1 touch cases "Strong rare-earth magnets and 100% UV-blocking acrylic shell guard against scratches, dust, and UV damage."

I wouldn't mind seeing one of these in the testing please.

I'm definitely getting one of these!

"Card Shellz magnetic holder - also known as a one-touch magnetic holder—gives collectors a secure, clear way to protect and display cards in striking glass-clear acrylic case. Strong rare-earth magnets and 100% UV-blocking acrylic shell guard against scratches, dust, and UV damage."

I have to say the ballpoint pen does look very suitable on vintage!

I have to wonder way back what other options there were, I don't believe Sharpie came around until the mid 60's and they were the first permanent markers if I'm not mistaken.

I just know that for Ultra Pros, the gold magnet is supposed to have UV protection. I don't know much beyond that.

We'll find out, I ordered BCW, Shellz, Ultra-Pro, Max Protection and some generic version. They're probably all from the same Chinese factory but I'll let the results do the talking. Once I get everything in I'll finish taking photos/scans, make a thread with the before photos and we'll see what happens. If there's significant changes in 6 months we'll do a check in then, if not then I'll keep letting it roll for the rest of the year then post the results.

Edit: Photo size test
